Interesting Essay on Website Owner Responsibility

I just watched the most recent Law and Order episode. The story follows the investigation of a murdered housewife and ultimately leads to the conviction of the daughter for soliciting the murder via her (embellished) myspace.com account. What I found worthy of this thread in this site’s feedback forum is how bfriendz.com (the fictional myspace.com) was seen as responsible for abetting the crime. IMO, It would do the owners and other interested parties of this site well to watch this episode and discuss the merits of site responsibility herein.

On the responsibility note: [quote=“The Rules”]Do not promote illegal activities. Links to warez sites or discussion of warez is not permitted. Breach of this rule can lead to legal proceedings against this site, and will not be tolerated. In cases where the law has been broken, Forumosa may notify the proper authorities if appropriate. Ok. If I get your drift, I’ve removed the offending link. It still doesn’t belie my point. You’ll need to watch it any way you can, an if that means waiting 2 years until it comes to DVD, then so be it. You can join the discussion then.

Oh, I didn’t say that I wouldn’t watch it, or that I wouldn’t use a grey/black torrent site. But the rules of this forum prohibit the promotion of such… and yet it happens. Which is interesting given the issue you raise.

Thanks for the link. Great quality and made for some ‘nice tv’. Bittorrent is a nice contrast to the old way of getting a box of videocassettes from home. Except I miss the commercials.

I didn’t find the implications on the show interesting, the put downs, the lack of understanding of something they are not involved with - these are all cliché. People completely out of the loop on a relatively new means of social interaction blaming their inability to get involved on those who have created it. Blech.
