I want to get my IDP to drive in Taiwan, do I need to register it at Taiepei or can I do it at any DMV?
You get it from your country’s issuer.
For example, IDPs in Canada are issued by CAA.
Since you mention a DMV, you might be in the US. If so, I find AAA to be a much faster and easier way to get your international driver’s license.
I have it ordered and it’s on its way but I saw the rules for taiwan stating thag if you plan to use it longer than 30 days you must register your IDP, so I’m wondering must I go to Taipei to do it or any city is ok
What is your registered address?
You can do it in any ‘Department of motor vehicles’. No need to go to Taipei.
Keep in mind the following Notices :
- Those who will be staying in Taiwan for 30 days or fewer can drive in Taiwan without registering an international driving permit.
- Individuals who are going to stay in Taiwan for more than 30 days should apply to register an international driving permit with the Motor Vehicle Offices.
- The valid period of the registration of an international driving permit starts from the application date. The longest period shall be 1 year, subject to the valid date on the holder’s resident certificate, entry visa, and international driving license.
- The registration of an international driving permit can only be used for those who staying in Taiwan between one and six months. Individuals residing here for a long-term period (over 6 months) shall obtain a driver’s license in Taiwan. This is a standard international practice.

This is some BS some over achiever added to their website, not clear that it is actually a law. Some gall referring to “international practice” when Taiwan issues 2 year international permits to it’s citizens! I used IDP’s for over 10 years in Taiwan before finally getting a local license due Kung Flu travel difficulties, never had an issue getting them stamped.
