International Gift Cards

My family (in the USA) wants to get me a gift for Christmas, and I’m thinking about asking for a gift card.

Do Costco gift cards purchased in the US work in Taiwan? If not, is there anything else that will work? Say… TGIF?

I can’t think of anything else, and I don’t think McDonald’s or 7-11 do gift cards…

No. Even starbucks cards don’t work in Taiwan, despite working in Hong Kong. There are very few stores here that are even the same as the US.

Aw, shucks.

But thanks for the quick reply

No worries. Stores where I would like to get a gift card from, like Best Buy… well they don’t have stores here.

Stores here do have gift cards, called 禮物卡, maybe see if they wanna buy a PCHOME gift card…forcing them to inevitably navigate a traditional chinese site.

Amazon.com? If you buy from the US site

What about one of those VISA gift cards? You can use them like credit cards here.

Except very few places take credit cards.

I had the same issue with my wedding. We had a party after back home and everyone wanted to give gifts. We thought about costco or anything we could use here. Nothing, we insisted on cash. It is everyone’s favorite gift

Yea this is a problem… even if they took Apple/Google/Samsung pay some stores still insist on using cards issued by their own banks. Or you have to go through elaborate schemes to use cards there (like for PX mart you have to use PX pay or you’re limited to cards issued by banks they work with).

Only Carrefour and a few others accept all VISA/MC cards.

This is a mess and the govt needs to do something about it.

Sometimes you can use JKO pay but no idea who accepts them.

Amazon virtual gift cards are great! Amazon now ships to Taiwan for free on orders over $75 USD.
