I just moved to taipei for work and the city has a great vibe!
I need assistance in finding an international kindergarten for my 4 year old son. We will live in the songshan district and finding a school that offers bus services would be very helpful.
Just a heads up, in order for a kindergarten to teach in anything but Chinese, it needs to be a school for foreign children (like, everyone needs a foreign passport to enroll).
There are quite a few English cram schools that act like kindergartens (they’re run during the day) in Songshan, but they’re “not kindergartens”; they’re registered as cram schools. This is the only way to get around that law. And as soon as one neighbor/jealous school owner sees that it’s a defacto kindy and calls 1999, it’s game over.
I could call the MOE again to ask (again), but when I called them last week they made it very clear that the only way English is allowed in kindergartens is as a stand alone class with a specific start and end time.
I got massively conflicting info from the labor bureau a few days later, as they said cram schools are welcome to get work permits for and employ foreign English teachers for under six education as long as they hold the proper credentials. Which is in conflict with what the MOE told me, which is that no work permits are issued to foreigners for under six education, period.
And some people on here said they were raided while teaching cram school English to under sixes and it was good that they were doing a song and dance thing, not teaching.
So the actual laws and the enforcement of law are two different things, but just be aware that if you’re going for an English kindergarten in songshan, there’s like a 99% chance something sketchy is going on legally.
Thank you for the feedback and heads up, I just need a kindergarten school for my 4 year old.
A proper school with the right standards and quality.
I looked at taipei American school and taipei European school and my eyes almost popped out looking at the cost. It was around 25,000 usd a year for kindergarten!!!
You’re going to struggle to find an English only Kindy which isn’t expensive or isn’t a bit crap. This is a good opportunity to put your child through a Chinese only kindy with all the long-term benefits that would provide your child. English at home, Chinese during the day. I guess you have reasons not to do this, but it really works.
I’m not aware of a reasonably cheap English only Kindy that isn’t a bit crap.
