Interview to Job Offer Ratio

Interview to Job Offer Ratio?

  • I almost always get offered the job.
  • I get offered the job more then half of the time
  • I’d say it’s about 50/50
  • I get offered the job less then half of the time
  • I almost never get offered the job

How often do you get offered a job if you go to an interview and do a demo (or no demo, if they don’t ask you to do one). I’m kind of curious about this one because I just noticed that I’ve been offered a job every time except once (that comes to mind, wait twice I remember another one) on the other hand I haven’t done many interviews/demos but I have a feeling that it’s probably more then 50% for most people.

I’ll just put up a poll and feel free to vote. (This is geared toward English teachers if you haven’t figured that out yet).

There are a lot of factors that go into getting a teaching job here (just like getting a job anywhere). Sex, place of birth, race/color, experience, schooling, etc.

If you always get offered a job or never get offered a job just vote in the closest one. Also, people who have been here longer might now almost always get offered the job, but when they first arrived had more trouble. Just vote however you see fit. I have faith that you’ll choose correctly.

Well…if you had been refering to my job search efforts in Canada, you haven’t polled for the correct answer.

But, as you are referring to my job search efforts as an ESL dude, you still haven’t polled for the correct answer.

Fix it and I’ll vote.

Damn all this poll-rigging.

What’s it missing? I’m kerfunkled (Gameclubbers will be seeing that one in my next game of scrabble). :s Even if I knew what you thought was missing it’s too late for me to add it.

I never apply for a job. In other words I got the first one and just stayed there. Till now.

Take out the top and bottom almosts and you’ll have it I think.

I’ve had one interview, recorded one cassette (instead of an interview) and one meeting where woman talked about the school for two hours and didn’t ask me anything much.

So I guess you could say three ‘interviews’ of a sort and I got all three. But then its not like I was applying to be a brain surgeon is it?

It’s going to depend on how many job interviews you go to. Sometimes I get bored and apply for jobs just so I can go chat with some people. What can I say? I love talking about myself.

I’ve had three jobs officially in Taiwan in nearly four years and done one demo and had two job interviews.

Wow, miltownkid, you’ve put me in a reflective mood. I’m the guy who clicked “less than half.” My percentage (percent of interviews resulting in offers) here in Taiwan is 40. That got me to thinking about Korea. My percentage there was 80. And when I left Korea, I thought the job market there was getting tight!

Also, when I first got here, I talked to a teacher at a small school out in the boonies. He had also taught in Korea. I told him of my experiences in Korea, and he said, “Yeah, that’s pretty much what happened with me.” But he was in the process of moving back to Korea. I also talked to a recruiter when I got here, a westerner who had also taught here. I described my experiences in Korea, and he said, “The schools here are pretty much like the ones you described” (i.e., in Korea).

And, well, they pretty much are. Except that the Korean schools were more inclined to hire me. Of course, maybe I don’t have a representative sample. Or maybe things have changed over there. Or maybe I look a lot older and more decrepit than I did three years ago, and they won’t hire me. Or maybe somebody in Taiwan will send word to the Koreans that I’m a difficult, sarcastic a******.

But still. Hmmm. Got some more thinking to do. . . . :ponder:

Location is a factor that this poll doesn’t distinguish from. Maybe that’s it?

Yeah, that sounded good to me too, but since I can’t change it I guess you’ll just have to add up the top or the bottom two (which would produce the same results). When I posted it I was thing around these numbers:
80 (or 90)% and up
55ish to 80/90%
45ish to 55ish%
45ish to 10/20%
10 (or 20)% and below

I just figured the results would be more revealing with more voting options (and I think they are).

I’ll have to try harder next time.

I have to carry a big stick everywhere with me so I can fight off job offers.

I’ve only been rejected once for a job, and that was because I had an English accent. They probably couldn’t handle such a rich and eloquent tongue.

Don’t you just hate those demonstrations you need to do to four walls and a single admin chap/manager. Running around like a looney pretending that you are teaching a classroom full of kids makes you look like a complete donkey. Demonstrations for adults are no better.

One of my schools leant me to another school who wanted me to work at another school who wanted me to work at another school
who wanted me to work at another school who wanted me to work at another school etc…

I’d be busy and rich now if all the hours offered at these schools wern’t the same as all the hours offered by the other schools.
It’s not as if I’m good at teaching either.*

You forgot the “more job offers than interviews” option. I don’t think I’m being arrogant saying that applies to me. You know what it’s like here.

Brian

I don’t get (well I do, but it’s silly) how physical appearance has so much to do with getting jobs here.

A VERY smart, friendly, skilled and experienced woman I knew from S. Africa had so much trouble getting work (She and I presumed this had much to do with her Indian ancestry)whereas I was offered jobs because I’m ‘handsome’.

Though I tried, I realized I was a terrible teacher. My old boss, who knows I’m a terrible teacher still calls me to see if I"ll come back.

And impress the xiaojies.

And your ability to rescue dangling toddlers from the jaws of crocodiles.

I guess here I’m batting .500 on offers-to-interviews, if you count an offer I received when I hadn’t interviewed, or applied, or done anything else except show up to watch someone else work. Of course, one of the ones I didn’t get was because I was too old and well-educated, and the other one was because I told the truth at the interview, which is always a bad idea.
