Just done, worked fine. Make sure to backup your contacts, sms etc. via iTunes first. Then update your iPhone to OS3.0 using SHIFT+Restore in iTunes before running redsn0w.
Be patient when it redsn0w says it’s done and prompts you to click “Finish”, the phone will still be busy for a while. When it’s ready you can use iTunes to restore your data.
This worked a charm to JB the 3G iphone with Redsn0w on a mac. Seems ultrasnow is only needed if you need an unlock as well. Either way, redsn0w allows you to apply ultrasn0w.
I beg your geekgods pardon for asking this question, BUT I am trying to learn as I have an iphone too… Unlocking (jailbreaking) the phone allows one to do what? Use networks other than AT&T with the phone?

If you bought your phone in NZ, Taiwan, HK and now Australia, amongst a few other countries, your phone will be unlocked straight out of the box. So yes, unlocking the phone allows one to use networks other than AT&T with the phone. Jailbreaking allows you to add third party apps through installer programs placed onto your phone after the jailbreak (programs inclide cidia and ice depending on which jailbreak you used). Then there’s the whole ‘cracked app’ thing which you could probably google rather than bring up for discussion here.
