iPhone XS

Finally upgraded from a 6S. I’m not a huge fan of the shiny design, much preferred the brushed metal aesthetic. The screen is definitely sharper which is good, but the horn shape on top to accommodate the camera and speakers still looks weird to me. The phone is thicker — con. The phone is bigger — con. I liked the size of the 5S (because you could operate it fully with just one hand), so now if we could slim that design down even more (thickness, not screen width or height), and swap out the screen to one of much higher pixel density, that would be awesome. The next thing apple should do is figure out how to fit their next camera into the shell of the phone without having a “nipple” stick out (which the 6S also has and I still haven’t gotten used to). C’mon, we have robots in Mars and can edit genes, let’s find a way to fit cameras in a pleasing design, both aesthetically and ergonomically.

It’s also very hit and miss to unlock your phone with Face ID at night or in the morning when the lights aren’t on and/or with just a night light.

I’m also bracing myself for the battery to deteriorate to sh*t by this fall. Hearing the XR has way better battery life (and the XS Max has the most), but they both have big trade offs that would require other concessions.

Also, I miss not having a headphone jack! It’s less earphone use since I already have Bluetooth headphones. But that you can no longer use your car’s aux cable without a dongle. And then to charge it at the same time, you’ll need a different dongle that apple doesn’t currently make. And I live in a big city which means lots of radio stations so I don’t want to use that kind of adapter just for music (plus many have reported the audio quality from that is quite poopy). I also don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars to install a new stereo system in my car. Sigh.

Pro — the extra storage space is nice (I regularly shoot vids in 4K).

Well, I suppose this is the way we’re going.

I would have waited for the new one tbh.

Why did you go with the XS? I could never get used to such a large phone. Too big for me.

There are plenty of phones with good camera positions. Just not overpriced sheep phones that literally haven’t changed for 5 years.

Oppo Find X comes to mind where you dont even see the cameras till you are going to use them.

Which other one is smaller? The XR is about the same size. The Max is basically a phablet and out of question.

Ones that support iOS? I have a lot of paid iOS apps I use for my job. That also integrates with my iPad Pro.

Shudders at the thought. I personally hate iOS and macOS (Android and Ubuntu are much superior Linux implementations) and find my NT$4,000 phone performs identical tasks as smoothly and as quickly as my wife’s NT$30,000 iPhone. Of course my screen isn’t OLED, so I’m losing a bit of contrast pop, but I only use my phone to read news and email, participate on forums like these and stream Spotify. No evil social media bullshit shall take over my life. I’d rather be watching my 140" screen or reading on my Kindle.

What do you mean one that supports iOS? Only iPhones have iOS, even if it were open source, not a single company would use it. It lacks features, isnt overly fast and is behind on features by minimum of years at a time.

Its also extraordinarily ugly. Much the same as the phones themselves. Hardware in the iPhones are great, but the OS doesnt even seem to take advantage of it, especially after an update, which breaks something nearly every time, or slows down your phone because they want you to buy a new one.

And if you paid for apps for your job, you should be compensated for it, you dont buy it for work unless they are going to pay for it. My job pays for my phone, pays for my credit, pays for the apps I use for work. I even picked it out, s8+ when it came out, still have it, no point upgrading to a 9, 10, or even an 11 or 12 when they come out in a year, or less as normal. No phones have come with anything usfull in years, your only paying for face now.

The lack of headphone/earbud jack is annoying, because now you can’t listen to your podcasts or music on airplane mode when your battery is low (since airplane mode disables BlueTooth).

I think my original post will support your sentiments here specifically.

Sounds like you’ve got a great job. I run a film production company with some friends. Our clients pay us for services/a product, we provide the services/create that product with tools and resources we’ve previously acquired. We do get to write off many purchases so that helps, but that’s pretty much it.

Yeah, I’ve been rocking the 6S for 4 years going on 5 and could’ve gone longer tbh. The phone itself was a gift.

I was mixed up on the XS, I thought it was the max. Yeah the max is too big for me as well. Might as well carry a iPad around.

I’m waiting for the new model, I have the X and the XS didn’t make any real changes for me to upgrade.

I cycle my phones every 3 years. That’s about the limit to when I actually start to notice the upgrades. I have a 7, so I guess I’m due to upgrade with the next one. We’ll see. I’m getting more and more indifferent about the new stuff they’re doing with the phones. There better be some folding screen technology with the next one or something equally amazing, because the Face ID thing isn’t a draw for me.

It’s seems like less and less upgrades and higher and higher costs each time.

Apple has been scared of their own shadow since Jobs died. Now they’re content with making incremental tweaks, not ambitious innovations.

And it has been quite disappointing. That annual excitement for each Apple keynote and its one-more-things… Pain to see them go.

And now the apple tv+ … I guess I’ll refrain from knocking until I’ve seen at least one episode.

So they will be making original exclusives?

I do ha e a good job, I still work for the same company I worked for when I live in Australia. I’m a systems engineer, they do t pay for my contract as of last no the, since they can’t call international from their own mobiles, or won’t, because ouch.

I will upgrade my s8+, but in a year or two, when the new foldable types are a bit better and cheaper.
