Is AIT the only place that has a US Notary Public?

Just wanted to confirm if there was any other game in town.

We have a property sale in the USA that requires US Notary services. Well, I’m going to try out an online ‘remote notary service’ Apparently this is legal and possible in all 50 states of the USA. I just asked my escrow specialist in my real estate agent’s company if this will be OK. If anyone is interested in hearing about my experience, let me know and I’ll check back with an update on how it went. $80 using a webcam and securely uploading docs at home seems a lot better than dealing with the hassles of visiting AIT which as best as I can tell is the only other alternative while in Taiwan.

I emailed AIT and got this response to my question about US Notary services being available anywhere besides AIT.

"We apologize that we do not have the information you requested.

American Citizen Services"

So I went ahead and booked an appointment for notary services. Its true AIT Taipei only lets you book Tue or Thur morning appointments for notary. However Kaohsiung AIT has Mon & Wed morning availability for notary services. Their website says they will not provide witnesses if your documents require that in addition to the notary seal.

Are you certain you need a “US notary”?
I’ve had lots of documents accepted by different US agencies done by a local notary (they all speak English, that’s part of their gig).
The foreign/trade office notarisation deal is a total scam.

Well, it is a US property sale and the Title Deed Company is insisting I use a USA notary at an embassy. I’ve used local Taiwanese notaries for passport renewals before without any problem. There are plenty of notaries at local courthouse area. Just not US notary seal and stamp which seems to be the issue here for the escrow officer and title company.

I wish there was an easier way. I hate paying $50 USD PER signature at AIT.

Some I’m going next week for notary services. Isn’t AIT moving? Are they still at their old address near the Daan MRT Station? That’s the info in their website, but I wonder with the shutdown and all whether there has been no update recently.

I went there last week to notarize documents. They haven’t moved to Neihu yet; they are still near Daan MRT station. There’s info about the move, but you have to look hard for it.

FYI, I sometimes receive emails about the AIT representatives holding a “U.S. citizen town hall” in different cities. Specifically offering passport renewal and notary services.

You can also notarize documents online. I did it recently. Very convenient. Have you driver’s license and passport (both US) ready. 30 minutes. All done live. US $25.
