Is renouncing UK citizenship to become a Taiwanese citizen impossible like in Japan?

So I know that Japanese citizens are not physically able to renounce their citizenship to become a Taiwanese citizen because Japan doesn’t officially recognize Taiwan, since in order to renounce your citizenship you must be obtaining another country’s citizenship in place, so technically they consider you renouncing without a proper reason and would make you keep your citizenship thus making dual citizenship with Taiwan possible for Japanese citizens.

Looking at the UK renunciation guidelines, they are worded in a very similar way, you must be already a citizen of another country or renouncing for the purpose of obtaining another country’s citizenship and you must specify what country’s citizenship you’re obtaining. Since the UK doesn’t recognize Taiwan either, would UK citizens also be able to submit an application, be rejected on the grounds of the one-china policy and use that to prove to Taiwan that they made their best efforts to renounce, and thus be allowed to maintain dual citizenship without hassle?

The UK accepts applications for renunciation using Taiwan.

But. Restoring citizenship is relatively easy after renouncing.

To be specific restoring UK citizenship is easy.

If you read through the citizenship threads here you will find UK nationals who have done so and resumed UK citizenship. I advised a member here Gov Attache do so a couple of decades ago.

In the last couple of months another of my good friends from the UK naturalized and is now going through the renunciation and resumption. He advised he will spend more than UK Sterling 1500 in fees to do so.

BTW countries like Australia UK USA EU Canada etc recognize Taiwan as a country for visa and citizenship purposes just not formally the ROC government.

“A person who renounces British citizenship or British Overseas Territories citizenship has a right (once only) to resume that citizenship if the renunciation was necessary to enable him or her to keep or obtain some other citizenship.”

For resumption of UK citizenship

Not for me it wasn’t. It took 4 years. And will cost you a lot of money. Getting Taiwanese citizenship is easy on the other hand.

Really? One (British) friend got it done in a couple of months.

It really depends on if you have all your documents ready and prepare the application properly.

I was lucky with mine. Although mine was Aussie citizenship (not British) other Aussies waited months for theirs. @anon24369109 helped me with my application and I got it back in 8 days and had my new passport arrive in the mail 2 weeks after becoming Australian again.

But you are right in that British citizenship is expensive to restore. But thank your lucky stars that you can do it. I know many that would gladly pay triple the 1,200 pounds to reacquire their citizenship if they had the chance.

I had all the documents ready. The HO just said there was an unprecidented demand of applicants.
It’s not only the thousand plus pounds for reapplying it’s also the 500 plus pounds for renouncing. Then the cost of all translations we are talking 2000 plus. Then reapplying for the passport. Taiwan was way more efficient.
In fact the UK application is the most expensive in the world. Anyway I’m happy I could renounce from that s.hole anyway.

What were you translating? You actually don’t need to pay for an official translation you can get a friend or write one yourself and get a notary to sign.

It’s 450 but still expensive.

That would’ve likely been during the post covid rush.

Things have settled now it seems.

Just so you know if you’re anything like that Taiwan tattoo guy, you won’t be able to resume at all.

You think so ? You think there is an ease in the immigration crisis.

Don’t be like him… Also he is not a Taiwan citizen no matter how many times he claims… He never actually naturalized.

Yes, recently things have eased. But mostly in terms of student visas.
