Is Taiwan too boring to move to in 2025?

I’ve been looking into a move to Taiwan but i’ve pulled up a few threads here and on Reddit and it seems to be many people suggesting that Taiwan is too boring and Thailand/Vietnam are the places to move to these days. Is there some truth to that or is that coming from jaded expats?

Depends on what you consider boring. If looking for exotic exotic beaches, happy energy, and things that come with those, pass on Taiwan.

How old are you, what are you looking for, what do you do workwise, where in Taiwan would you live?

If you are about to finish your undergrad and are looking for the wild west, go to Vietnam. If you’re about to retire but never sowed those wild oats, go to Thailand. If you like tasteless soggy food and easy access to amazing natural spaces, Taiwan is the best choice!

The term “boring” depends entirely on the individual and what that individual finds interesting.

Unless the OP specifies what s/he likes and wants to accomplish, it’s not really possible to answer the question posted in the title of this thread.

Are you a seasoned traveler?

Then you know what to expect from developing countries and a developed country in terms of lifestyle.

What do their expat websites say?

I find that people only find places boring if they themselves are boring.

I’m late 20’s. Unemployed and looking for a place to live, start a business, and have some fun. I’d live in Taipei.

I missed out on a lot of “enjoying myself” the past few years so I want to prioritise that more. I’d say Vietnam is probably the other option I am considering. It seems fun, and growing with lots of opportunity. The more I read about this online I see expats in Taiwan saying they would go to Thailand/Vietnam if they weren’t tied up there. This is making me question if I should do the same.

But more than having fun, I want a place that’s stable and I want to learn the language. I have been learning mandarin casually and am more interested in learning Mandarin than Thai/Vietnamese. And besides the fun craziness I don’t know if I see Thailand/Vietnam as places that wouldn’t annoy me with all the chaos. I also considered Singapore but I feel like it’s not the place for me right now (maybe later). I want somewhere where a little more life happens that’s why I am considering Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand.

I’ve been to most countries in Asia.

Complaining about corruptions, pollution, scams, etc

Where are you where life “doesn’t happen”?

I felt like this in my late 20s, realise life doesn’t happen anywhere.

Anywhere can be boring, wherever you go you get arguments about air con and sour cream.

Sorry I was referring to Singapore compared to Taiwan/Thailand/Vietnam. I got my visa processed to move to Singapore a few months ago but already left just travelling around now.

Taiwan seems like a nice balance between Singapore and Southeast Asia. But I haven’t lived there so I am worried it’s too low energy because of what i’ve read.

What do you mean by there being no “happy energy” in Taiwan?

“just traveling around now” … so what’s holding you back from visiting and seeing for yourself first-hand?

I have, but wanted to ask ask expats because living and visiting somewhere often are different experiences. I’ll be visiting in the next month or so for sure.

What do you think of Singapore?

You’re gonna want to look into the Taiwan Gold Card. If you can’t get it, you’ll need quote a bit of capital to start a business and stay legal

I’m actively looking for work in Vietnam now. I see more fun and opportunity there, for me

Here, no doubt Mandarin Chinese is the more useful language.

Thailand wasn’t chaotic, I haven’t lived in Vietnam.

I don’t live in Taipei, apparently thongs happen there…

Great city. Very comfortable.

A bit too small for what I want right now, maybe in a few years i’ll be back. I think it’s a good place to be if you are an executive or high earner but not necessarily the best place to build a business (small country, less opportunity)

Where in Vietnam are you looking at?

“I’m actively looking for work in Vietnam now. I see more fun and opportunity there, for me”
*and comments like this are exactly why I started this thread haha.

I really like Vietnam. I’m just worried if the pollution and chaotic roads would be too much after a few months.

A bit reason why I am considering Taiwan over Vietnam is learning Mandarin.

and RE visa, Gold Card would be the one, thanks for the suggestion, I have read up on it.
