Is There a Deposit on Beer Bottles in Taiwan?

Just looked at a beer bottle (600ml Taiwan beer) and see a 2 NT symbol on it. I was wondering if there is a 2 NT deposit on bottles and if so, how to go about claiming the money. Do you just bring them to a grocery store or something? Please advise. Thanks.

yes you get $2 back, take to any place selling them. Not positive but i think it may only be Taiwan beer bottles. Cans have nothing.

Not worth the trouble, unless you drink a lot or store them for a year as average drinker … just give them to the cleaning lady at your building or one of those ‘recyclers’.

You just take them to the supermarket … cashier … than go shop, when paying they’ll subtract the empty bottles.

I wish they’d raise the deposit prices. The price was set a long time ago and it’s essentially meaningless today.

Taiwan Draft 18 day bottles have no deposit. don’t try to return these bottles.

Only those big glass bottles have a deposit… they are so heavy its not even worth the muscle to return it. I think they should put a 10NT deposit on all soft drink bottles, it would cut down on littering a lot for sure.

You guys will never get rich with that attitude  I think it is worth it for some, and indeed many people collect and make a living from it. Up to you if you want, but $2nt is like $0.06 USD which is similar to Canada’s deposit rate of 0.05-0.10, where people also collect lots of cans/bottles for . even at this $2 rate, few bottles are thrown away, seems to work alright.

the brown bottles are also used for cooking wine, is there a deposit on those as well?

I think people who makes a living collecting bottles probably lives on 50nt a day. Think about how many bottles it would take to make even 100nt… And 50 bottles weight a LOT. People who do that do it because there is nothing else they could do.

Money is what economy makes turn … keeping all for yourself is selfish … and there are people out there that really need it … the only thing that will make you richer is drinking tap water only.

To each their own, but i know some people with nice cars and houses made 100% from recycling with their truck or scooter, granted not just bottles. 50nt a day, I don’t look down at that i find it commendable. But you know, if people want to no point telling them its not worth it, they can or cant, donate to someone or keep it for yourself.

although if trying to help people in need, it might be easier to take it in yourself and give them cash, save them the hassle of walking or riding a bike… We used to go around with some enthusiastic students picking up recycling and they would give the money to some temple charity they like. It ain’t all greed or inability to do other work.

still curious though: “the brown bottles are also used for cooking wine, is there a deposit on those as well?”

The problem is that you will need to go through other people’s trash/recycling to get anywhere. Anyone that is drinking enough Taiwan beer to get a significant return (regardless of weight) will be broke and an alcoholic.

I cannot even imagine the chaos (between the amas) that would ensue if Taiwan had a small 1-2 NT deposit on all cans or bottles (including plastic). Things would be cleaner though.

It’s like Donald Trump got rich because buying a wig is a waste of money attitude.

Well, ya, if you look at it that way. what i mean is why scoff at people saving $? its all cash, i save bottles from friends and myself, it adds up. though i usually leave it all in a bag outside my house as i am too lazy to take it in myself, but people are making good money from recycling (not drinking). Most the people i know that are very wealthy became so by being very cheap, along with being very hard working/smart. not saying recycling will make one rich, but man some people here do make good money doing so!

My current garden used to be a beer can/bottle storage place from my previous neighbors. They easily cleared a few hundred cans/bottles a month, someone made good coin off those people, and they are certainly not the exception. Thats going to depends where you live im sure, but Taiwan in general is filled with raging alcoholics  you can make 5% of you $ back just with your consumption of bottles, that matters for many…thats all i mean.

The only way you are going to make good money recycling is by diving through recycling bins. I’m not scoffing at the money but the method.

Even a few hundred bottles = <1000NT. To make actual money you need to be collecting 1000’s of bottles.

i cleared out about 2000+ when i first moved into the house i am renting now. My current fenced garden used to be a bottle stashing spot haha. Never underestimate peoples’ drinking capability, it can be truly mind blowing  It’s no wonder so many people here die so young from ethanol.

I make good money, but i would be lying if told you I never go through trash anymore  Its a social/cultural thing i guess, but if a person dont mind other peoples pointing and general lack of manners, there are some jewels to be found. We used to call it garping. dumpster diving essentially. That sounds bad, but one mans trash is another mans treasure. Taiwanese garp with the best of them, they take it to a whole new level. I would say that the old guys i know here, one is a friend, that goes around on a bike all day picking up shit for low pay, are straight up the nicest human beings i know in Taiwan. None of that status and ego bullshit you get with so many.

Recycling business is volatile, prices of recyclable materials go up and down … it needs a smart recycler to get really rich, buy cheap, store until prices go up … but than you need a space to stack it all.

A lot of the so called recycled stuff gets incinerated because it is not worth enough to recycle, unfortunately. The light plastic boxes for fruit and goods, they all get incinerated. Almost all plastic drinks cups aswell.

Do convenient stores take them? Have about 3 or 4 of them just sitting here. Might as well save them then carry them to the corner with me next time I want a beer. I do not have to make big bucks to save a few dollars and recycle. I am ok with saving $10 on a $50 beer.

Some of these have the 2 “yuan” logo on them and some don’t. I brought them to one store that wouldn’t take the ones without that logo, but they don’t carry that beer. I brought ones without that logo to a store that does sell Only 18 Days and they took them regardless if they had the logo or not. Not sure what the deal is with this.
