To me, Nakata’s Ringu AKA “The Ring” is one of the all-time creepiest movies. Eerie, subtle, keeps-you-glancing-sideways-for-days kind of horror.
The other day, I rented Ju On, a newer piece by Shimizu. In spite of it being quite heavily depedant on “Ringu” for its gags, not to mention not bothering to justify what happens in anything but a cursory way, this is still a damn scary movie. I’m ashamed to admit I even had to watch several of the scenes in fast-forward!
Now my interest in Japanese horror is peaked. Can anyone recommend some other good creepy films?
