Hi i’m on vacation in taipei until next week. I’m a jazz guitarist based in Montreal… I was wondering if there’s any jazz to check out in the taipei area (preferably jam sessions)… i’ve heard of brown sugar which i will check out eventually…
does anyone know of guitar stores with jazz gutars ? i checked out sls music but didn’t find anything interesting.
the jazz scene in taiwan seems dead… please tell me it ain’t so!! i read about jam sessions in taichung but i dont feel like travelling too far…
Sadly, there’s hardly any jazz scene to speak of in Taipei. A few places that sometimes have live jazz of varying quality are the Blue Note bar/coffee shop, Brown Sugar, the Riverside Cafe, and the Living Room. If you’re looking for some place to jam within the next few days, your best bet would be to go and talk to Geddy Lin, the owner of the Riverside Cafe (www.livingroomtaipei.com) – he might invite you to do a set at his place.
Good info, Rotalsnart. I was hoping someone knowledgeable would reply. Yeah, the few sets of “Jazz” I have seen at some of the “jazz bars” in Taipei have varied widely. Sadly, most have been at the bottom end of the scale.
MisterrD might also want to hook up with “the poster” on this site. He is a also jazz guitarist too.
thanks for the reply guys. I’m here on vacation but if I had known about forumosa earlier (all my previous search results were in chinese), I would’ve planned some gigs as well… (perhaps next time)
I emailed a few of the places you mentionned and i’m gonna check some out probably tomorrow night.
well i checked out riverside as it was just around the corner from where i’m staying and spoke to geddy, nice fellow! it looks i’ll bring my axe to the jam session on monday, should be fun! thanks again guys
they’ll like you a lot, because you’re not staying here. once you play geddy’s ass to the ground(which you will, though no one will know it from his memorized riffs- he’ll know it though) he’ll be glad you’re just passing thru.
i’ll bet you can play my ass into the ground. and i’ll still like you!

Hey, I’m new to the forum…trying to get some jazz jam sessions. I went to Temple U for Jazz ed…need some cats to play with since they don’t seem to understand what a jam session is here.
Hey there, I noticed this old thread. Ill be in Taiwan this Fri 18 April till Mon. Was wondering if there was any Jamming going on over easter in which case i will bring an instrument with me. I have been to Taiwan in December, and enjoyed how relaxed it was, compared to Hong Kong where i am working.
I work with a colleague who’s husband used to play at Sappho quite a lot. Is the Monday Jam at riverside still going on?
If your interested you can check out some sounds when i was playing out a lot, before i was totally embracing the wonderful world of education.
