Joining NTU as a Taiwanese citizen with GED

Hi guys! Hope its alright to ask here but is it possible to get into NTU as a Taiwanese Citizen with a GED? I’ve stayed overseas my whole life and wanted to try getting into NTU for their English Literature major. Do they accept with GED or is their high school exam a must? Thanks a bunch!

What is a “GED”?

Guy

It’s General Educational Development, a high school equivalency credential!

So by “equivalency,” you are saying you do not have a high school diploma?

Guy

Sadly, I don’t. :frowning: Well, I do but it is no longer accepted worldwide. I got it from my other country that counts Grade10 as finishing high school.

You could email NTU directly and ask. More reliable answers that way.

Even if this equivalency is accepted (I have no idea about this point), there would still be the matter of competing for entry through the entrance examination system. There are other routes for Taiwanese to enter universities here (example: a parent was assigned overseas through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) but they are relatively niche.

Good luck @dancingcatlady as you sort out your options.

Thank you both @ALL_DAY and @afterspivak ! I mailed NTU and hope to get a reply soon. Sadly if I have to take the entrance examination, I’d probably take so long since I’m super baby at Mandarin. :")

As a Taiwanese, do you think there is another route for you to enter an undergraduate program at a Taiwan university other than taking the extrance examination?

Guy

I’m honestly thinking I finish 1st or 2nd year of university in another country and transferring there. Though I’m not so sure if that’s possible.

If you are Taiwanese, I don’t think the route you’ve described to entering a university in Taiwan is possible.

I am happy to be corrected by others if I am wrong.

Good luck, you’ll need it.

As a Taiwanese citizen, your only option is take the same college entrance exams that Taiwanese take. If you have another citizenship maybe you can attempt to apply as a foreign student though if you have Taiwan citizenship, this may or may not be allowed.

And NTU is exceptionally hard to get into for Taiwanese, and the exams are all in Chinese.

I’m not even sure a GED is acceptable at all for NTU.

I really don’t know what to say but report back if you have found a solution, because when I asked them all I got is a lot of “don’t bother us, we have nothing for you”.

If you can get into any university in the US or whatever, do that, even if you have to do university of phoenix.

Or you can look into private universities like TKU or Fujen University… these have much less competitive entrance requirements compared to NTU.

:frowning: Aw, that’s sad to hear. They do be pretty blunt there. I just browsed TKU and it seems like a pretty great alternative, thank you friend! Will report back if I get any reply from NTU.

Yea, foreign students basically get a pass and can get into NTU if they say pretty please… it’s just how it is. I think it’s because they want to attract foreign students.

Do you think it would be possible to get into NTNU with a GED too?

No idea, never really asked. But NTNU is nearly as good as NTU meaning it’s nearly as hard to get into…

Well, I’ve sent mails to both!! So hopefully they’ll reply soon! If I can’t get into either, I’ll just get a bachelor somewhere else and get my Masters in Taiwan. : D

So I’ve heard back from them! Unfortunately, they won’t allow me to attend their universities UNLESS I finish their high school and do the entrance exam, or finish a 4 year bachelor program in another country. I’ve decided to just finish my bachelor program at the university I’m currently studying at. After that, return to Taiwan to continue my Masters. : D Thanks for all the help guys.

Why not begin adult life after getting your batchelors.

Already began adult life many years ago and have a stable WFH job! : ) Thought I should get a Masters since I’m going for a university lecturer.
