My GERD went away when I lost weight. If I get to around 90 kilos and especially a bit below, like magic it’s gone. Get to 92 or above, and it reappears. Something about internal fat and how this pushes against inner organs.
What are you too old to do (that young adults do) in your early 30s?
Not sure if there is much joy in aging.
It’s a relief not to feel the need to compete anymore. Not in sports, not in the dating world. If you can’t win anyway, you can relax and enjoy the moment. No one cares about your hair or your clothes; no one even notices most of the time.
Your radius of movement gets smaller, and your mobility gradually decreases, which sucks if you still want to keep on going out in the world.
You become more vulnerable, possible prey to predators. You become as helpless as a child, but only if you are lucky, you will have people who are willing to take care of you. If not, you might live a lonely, painful rest of your life.
You see friends and family members die left and right, and know soon it will be you. Illness and ailments come, and you will not be able to choose which one. You might face tough decisions to have major/expensive/dangerous surgery, or have your life cut short suddenly, or suffer a debilitating event like a stroke, making you immobile and dependent on caregivers. You might be fairly healthy but poor, and need to work to make ends meet despite being old and tired.
The modern world moves too fast, and you just can’t keep up with new technology, and everyday simple tasks get overly complicated.
Grandkids give you joy, but how often do they visit? You have seen it all and have a wealth of wisdom, but is anyone even interested in hearing what you have to say?
Lucky are the old people who don’t have to worry about money, health, and loneliness. Those who have a caring family and can go out to a park and enjoy chatting with friends, or just sit on a bench and look up into the trees. ![]()
Garlic works for everything it seems
Well at least here in South of Taiwan (and Japan too) they do hear what you say, maybe not show it at the time but many remember. Here meet adults talk with glowing wisdom from their grandparents (sometimes more than mom/papa!)
30? And u be aching ??? Dang go climb Everest already
I find the older I am the less people want to hear what I say
They never did. Getting older means you just start noticing.
I am happy whenever I wake up in the morning with pain, as it means I am still alive ![]()
Update: I just came back from Portugal, ate like crazy (I’m vegetarian, though), and came back with 14% body fat (I’m female). I guess the cheat code is walking all day and lifting heavy suitcases, so it can still be done at 30+.
So… I assume you’re lean as f’, but 14% is close to hitting essentia fat limits for women - think competition ready female body builder levels - so probably not close to an accurate reading if you were eating like crazy. ![]()
I used to be a competitive triathlete and swimmer, so I have always been lean. I still work out almost every day so it’s not that far from my normal body composition.
Might add that maybe my “crazy” is not other people’s crazy.
I don’t like fried food, but I love yogurt and apples, so I ate that a lot.
Cool. What triathlon distance did you compete in? Also, what was your swim stroke and distance? I bet you would do very well for your age group in triathlons and swim meets here in Taiwan.
I used to do decently for my age group in the sprint distance triathlon. But stopped competing 8 years ago.
Getting into the middle age bracket now. Last couple of years, the desire to do stuff is still there, but it just doesn’t happen.
I booked flights to Taiwan twice in August, didn’t go and took big hits on the booking fee each time, the flight time with my hips and knees is just unworkable. I went somewhere else which was half the flight time and I really fucked my legs up and walked with a painful limp for a few days.
I basically just work, which I enjoy but not sure there’s any spark there, and then come home and stare at meaningless shit. Weekends, I drive for a couple of hours to have a nap on the beach, and then I drive home.
Interestingly, I can’t really be bothered with long-term friends at the moment, I’m meeting new people but I’m not convinced that they are going to take me to ‘new places’ in life. In fact, the thing I’m noticing more is that they are looking to me to set the tone and elevate them which is a new sensation.
I guess people think that age and experience brings wisdom and responsibility and it fucking ain’t like that at all.
I did mostly Olympic distance. I hope that in a few years more, when I have more time, I can sign-up for longer races. I don’t care about winning anymore, so I would race just for fun.
Also, I have a couple of injuries due to overuse and bike falls, so taking care of my health is a priority now that I’m older (I guess this is a constant for all of us in this thread).
For swimming I did mostly 200 fly and 400 IM medley. Basically the events that nobody wants to do because they are long and painful.
Are you still competing @marasan ? How is the age-group/masters scene here in Taiwan?
I stopped competing in triathlons 8 years ago. I did a relay just this past weekend, though. It was a weird distance (57 or 58 kilometers), but the swim was still the same 1500m for the Olympic distance. I did really, really poorly. I swam behind someone, trusting that he was sighting correctly, only to find out later he was not! So I swam the second half doing all the sighting myself. It was at Liyu Lake in Hualien so the venue was beautiful. I want to do that again next year with the same relay team.
As far as swimming is concerned, I only competed in one meet years ago. I did the 50 meter freestyle race. I believe the masters scene is quite lively in Taiwan. Maybe I’ll get into that sometime. I’m sure you would do great considering your past competition experience.
There used to be a swimmer on forumusa who would place first in the 50 freestyle for his age group, and he would win it by quite a margin.
Super! What you mentioned about the scenic races is very motivating. Maybe I could pick future races just based on location.
Thank you so much for telling me about your experience! Currently, I am choosing to focus on my career (and weightlifting, sports-wise), but endurance sports will always be dear to my heart, so I’m pretty sure I’ll go back.
My God I’m getting tired just reading this.
I would love to do a triathlon or a mini triathlon, if there is such a thing, sounds more fun. A lot of people seem to be into numbers and competing such as my colleague and his wife but I’d be happy just to participate. I picked up an injury from running , plantar fascitis , and it’s taken ages to get better. It has been a real bitch that has interfered with our family group activity, along with the shitty weather this year (hiking) , but it has made me marvel on the ability of the human body to fix things that are broken or damaged. I ran heavily just one time sprinting past my kids, I won, but I also lost ![]()
. Also my footwear was probably worn out, it’s important to change sports shoes regularly and I have switched to wearing them instead of sandals which were my go to. Also I gained a bit of weight and I think that helped to cause the injury.
Staying uninjured or less injured and knowing your limits, or breaching those limits carefully over time, certainly seems to be key.
Yea, I feel weight becomes the enemy as you get older, even if you’re fit, low bodyfat, and jacked - just more wear and tear on everything.
