Ok, I booked a one-night stay at the famous and infamous building 85 in Kaohsiung. Major hotel shut down long ago, but on some floors, there are a few airbnbs and BnBs still operating and the prices are really competitive. About 800-1000 NTD for a night via booking for staying in Kaohsiung’s most iconic building!
That was the positive side. The negative is that you hear plenty of scary stories. Sex, drugs, rock n’ roll and cockroaches.
I need your advice: How will I survive building 85? Has anybody been there lately? What should I make sure to check out there?
Get yourself one of those rotating contraptions that the night markets vendors use to keep the flies away. Install it near your face at night to keep the cockroaches at bay.
Other than that’s enjoy the sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. You’re only young once and good memories stay with you forever.
It was fine. Nice view. There’s definitely no sex or drugs… there was some nice karaoke including of a few classic rock songs at the end of the dinner though.
Where are you staying in order to only pay 800 NTD a night at the 85 tower? Are you sleeping in one of the elevators?
Beyond that, I don’t know what to say about it. I think its exterior is striking and essential to the Kaohsiung skyline. The interior… from what I’ve seen… is fairly dull though. It apparently is struggling according to the other thread. Maybe your 800 NTD will pull it out of the red!

Cockroaches are an invasive species everywhere. You should be more afraid of the chemicals used to eradicate ALL cockroaches. Be more worried about bed bugs.
Rock and roll? Well, hardly. KTV is common here, as are dance clubs. But “rock and roll” wouldn’t be what anyone calls either of those in Taiwan. So no worries. Soft romantic/depressing songs or techno a like. Just expect some bass bumps if there are clubs within a few floors of yourself.
air Bnb sucks. It’s cheap for a reason. Leave the cir for “clean”.
Go to a proper love motel. At such establishments they:
cater to sex and know how to clean toilets better than hotels or private landlords.
They are aware of drug use and also know how to clean based on such.
Their sound proofing is fucking superb. See above 2 points.
Cockroaches don’t exist, not because of chemicals but because the sound proofing basically necessitates the sealing of cracks.
Rooms are way better value.
Have car parking.
Have staff on site, unlike air bnb.
Has 24/7 food/drink delivery.
Just don’t sit in the chair with handles, and youll get along just fine.
The 85 building is undergoing a massive renovation. Some brave soul has decided to totally overhaul the rooms and restaurants and reopen in 12-18 months. The stories of roaches are probably due to the ongoing renovations as their regular food supply,however old has been disrupted. 2 Taiwanese operators, the grand Formosa group and the splendor group and 1 Chinese owner have tried and failed to make it work. The latest owner runs a chain of seafood restaurants down south
Sounds like Taiwans version of chunking mansions. Scary stuff! Can you get a curry there though? That would make all the craziness a bit easier to deal with.

I used to stay at 85 back in the day when I would make weekend trips to KH in my early days in Taiwan a little over a decade ago. I remember there being a hotel starting from the 13th floor up to the ?? floor. I think on Friday nights you could get the weekday rate, it wasn’t that expensive. I was young back then, so wasn’t at all picky about my accomodation, except price. It was good enough for me back then. I remember that there’s a convenience store on the 12th floor, so you don’t even need to go outside the building… now that’s convenient!
My bad. People are the cause of them being introduced and invasive and or constant disgusting life styles causing them to eat and breed to near infinity. We didn’t make them, we made hem become a problem.
