I’m completely out of touch with what’s happening in contemporary music back in the UK, so the name Katie Melua meant nothing to me at all until I heard a snippet of one of her songs a few days ago. I was bowled over by the loveliness of her voice, so went a-searching on YouTube and Google. I discovered that she was Europe’s top-selling female artist a couple of years ago, demonstrating the excellent taste of CD buyers on our great continent. I also found that she has a very interesting background, being a Georgian who moved to Northern Ireland with her heart surgeon dad when she was eight years old, and relocated to England when she was fourteen. As well as having such a lovely voice, she also happens to be absolutely gorgeous to look at. I’m totally smitten.
Here are my four favourite songs by her that I’ve been able to find on YouTube, and which I’ve been playing over and over again. I want to get her albums as soon as possible, but searches so far in a couple of record stores have yielded no success:
Had much the same experience as you Omni. I first heard Katie Melua’s Nine Million Bicycles a few months back and was convinced it was some weird attempt at an old Dengli Jun (鄧麗君) tune. Umm, maybe the music is “borrowed”? Like it a lot though.
My wife loves her ‘Nine million bicycles’ … from her ‘piece by piece’ CD … I already have the music since almost 2 years … she recently published her new CD … ‘Pictures’ …
She has a pretty voice, but it’s not very powerful at all. Somewhere between humming and singing… The influence of contemporary western music is vivid. Not necessarily a bad thing for some people… The compositions are thorough and thoughtful. The lyrics and music are well integrated. A pretty good package all in all but not my cup of tea.
Omni,
I think I saw a CD of hers at the FNAC in the basement of Asiaworld (corner Nanjing East Rd and Dunhua N Rd) recently.
You might keep looking around other FNACs (mostly inside Mitsukoshi department stores) or at the Eslite music stores.
