I’m not completely against TCM - if something works then it works - but 95% of it appears to have been experimentally tested and confirmed as complete bollocks.
As regards kidney failure, there’s also the Taiwanese habit of swallowing medicine - traditional or otherwise - as a matter of routine. The theory seems to be that if medicine works when you’re ill, it must work even better when you’re not ill. Older people especially seem to have a vast collection of pills and potions that they pop once-a-day to ward off the grim reaper (possibly with the exact opposite effect).
