Hey there, I am in the middle of moving and while waiting for my deposit back the landlord started to add tons of things onto what they were going to take off the deposit. Such as charging 4k for cleaning then also 6k for cleaning the air conditioners. The place was a bit dirty so i agreed to pay for the cleaning which 4k was already a ton of money for that. But then requiring me to pay for cleaning of the air conditioners seems like it is just regular use and shouldnt be my responsibiliy. The charges at the end only for cleaning and no damages comes to 11k. Are they allowed to do this? Thanks!
So you agreed to pay? You should have had it done before you moved if you wanted to save money. The aircons could cost 6k but how many aircons are there?
It does sound like he’s trying to fleece you. How long have you lived there? Were the AC units cleaned before you moved in and while you were there?
Not sure what the rules are, if any, for deducting cleaning fees. NT$4k does sound excessive, but I suppose it depends on the size of the place and how messy you left it.
Well i only agreed to pay for the cleaning lady not the ac cleaning as it was crazy expensive. 3 air conditioners
I was there for 2 years they were cleaned when i moved in and no not cleaned when i was there. But other places the owner would always take responsibility and have them cleaned before and while living there.
I’d contest that. Do you have receipts or bank statements for the rent payments, and was the owner paying taxes?
Owner was paying the taxes but i would always send the rent from the atm so physically no i dont have receipts but maybe could find them from the bank.
I’d look into what your contract and the laws say if I were you, but to my understanding NT$4k would cover quite a lot of hours for a cleaning at typical rates.
Did you claim the rent on your income tax?
No my tax gets deducted from my school directly
I’m not sure you understood @TT’s point. I think he meant taxes on the rental income, not property taxes or anything. Are you sure he was paying those?
Point is whether that might be something to use as leverage.
Yes 4k is the deal of a lifetime for the cleaner so i was already overpaying there, so naturally the extra crazy amount was brutal to add.
OOOO i see. That i really dont know.
It’s off topic, but this is wrong. Your school withholds taxes, and if you’re not aware of the difference it suggests you might not have filed income tax returns before, and you should (because there’s a good chance you’ll be due a refund).
I have filed and got a refund before so yes my wording was a bit wrong there.
Tell the landlord you aren’t paying the AC fees unless it is in the contract specifically with the amount clearly outlined , you paid him 4k for cleaning that’s more than enough already ,if he keeps insisting you are going to have to think about filing for tax rebate on the rent next year.
That’s a lot of hassle for him to deal with and loss income for him.
You need to check your contract instead of talking here.
Fair enough — just wanted to make you aware in case you might be able to get something back. It’s surprising how often I’ve read about someone working here, sometimes for years, without knowing how taxes work and that they’re due a refund.
I have cited the contract with them and still wasnt able to do anything. So you are saying that by mentioning the tax rebate it might influence the owner to change his mind?
Probably. If he has no official income it won’t affect him much but if he does it could get fun.
It’s hassle for him , he wants to hassle you you can hassle him. He got 4k that’s more than enough unless stated otherwise in contract.
You need to put on your big boy pants and check your own contract !!
