I hope this doesn’t come across as rude or racist, esp being a new member here, but the other day I was told that there’s quite a large population of South Americans here in Taiwan especially in nightclubs, is this true? Just wondering out of curiosity really. I grew up in NZ and have come back to visit family and a bit of holiday for 3 months, so not sure what the demographic currently is in Taiwan.

I’ve not noticed that many people from South America. However, Taiwan does have diplomatic ties with some of the smaller Central American countries so that would probably increase the numbers.

Its just something I heard about, as I was having a conversation with my cousin suggesting she could go out to nightclubs or pubs to meet guys, and she said most of the people who go there are South Americans, so that took me by surprise a little. I’m not sure what the nightclub scene is like here though, could be very different to NZ ones for all I know!

Sorry, I didn’t know that the conversation with your cousin was in Chinese. Other than curiosity, is there any particular reason for your enquiry? There are a lot of Southeast Asians in Taiwan, too.
The demographic of Taiwan is quite varied, actually: It even includes people who grew up in New Zealand.
Question: Do New Zealanders, and/or Taiwan-born New Zealanders frequent nightclubs? Just curious…
There are probably a couple of dozen Central Americans at Tamkang University (Danshui), and I know many of them go out clubbing - I wouldn’t exactly call it a big demographic, but if you run into that crew in a nightclub once or twice, you’re going to notice.
I would say your cousin is a little confused…unless she only goes to Latino/Salsa nights. Nightclubs in Taiwan are filled with Taiwanese, American-Chinese, Canadians and Lithuanians. In that order.

Just to check out the scene I would recommend going to the Warner Village (Vieshow) area on a Saturday night. There’s a big cluster of nightclubs there. Room 18 etc. Otherwise checkout Luxy on Zhongxiao Sec. 4 on any night when they have an overseas DJ. This is all high end action. The studenty types frequent more scungy places such as Roxy 99 near Shida.
Honey, we are not a lot but we make ourselves noticed. 
Seriously, even counting the thousands of Taiwanese that migrated to South America and came back, you can’t find a handful at a time, even in a tiny disco. Even on salsa night. 
But some Taiwanese speak Spanish.

Nah, I meant the other South Americans, like Argentina, Brazil, etc. So I guess the general consensus is there aren’t quite as many South Americans as I was told…
In 17 years here, I’ve met approximately one South American.
I have the occasional beer with a brazilian pilot.
I once danced a tango with a svelte Venezuelan.
I haven’t seen any Brazilians here.
Waxing isn’t popular here.

OP: Currently there are only 24 states or statelike entities that officially recognize the Republic of China. Among them are Belize, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and Paraguay. In order to strengthen the diplomatic ties to these 24 states, the Taiwanese government offers quite a lot of sholarships (tuition, accomodation, some extra money) to residents of those countries for studying a full Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at a Taiwanese university. As this is part of Taiwan’s “soft diplomacy” policy, these scholarships are administrated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is why a lot of degree seeking foreign students in Taiwan are of Central or South American origin. I don’t know any specific numbers but MoFA schould have them somewhere on their webpage.
So yes, in certain areas (e.g. university campus and surroundings) you are likely to run into groups of Latin American people.
Also, there are nightclubs that are highly frequented by them, but that’s certainly not true for all nightclubs.
