Last minute air tickets

has anyone heard of this or bought one before. i have heard stories where people turn up at the airport and buy tickets at ridiculously low prices (at the last minute) cause the airlines want to fill the seats.
also, buying directly from the airline close to the travel date.

how would i go about getting a really cheap ticket?

I have found that eva’s prices tend to change depending on the departure time. I travel to Bangkok a great deal and end up saving 50% by taking the 11pm flight.

Never heard of what you described though.
