This restaurant looks like one of the swishest places in Taipei at the moment. It’s located on the top floor of Jing Hua Cheng/Core Pacific City, aka the Living (Hell) Mall at #138 Bade Road. Friends of mine were there on the weekend andd haven’t stopped talking about it. They said it was expensive ($3600NT for two people) but worth it. I’ve poked my head in the door, and it looks pretty classy. It was also full on a Tuesday night, which bodes well for the place. Anyone else been there? If you want to go, I would suggest making rreservations. Their number is 3762-1312
Definitely expensive! But if you’re after excellent roast beef it’s the place. Forget the salad and other knick-knacks the beef is what you go for; it’s served straight from a huge trolley at your table. The trolley contains half a cow’s worth of beef and you choose your cut. Served with mash, gravy and, believe it or not, Yorkshire pudding. Minimum a grand a head just going through the door.
I went there last night with my better half, planning on making a dent in the 10k she won as a door prize at her company’s weiya.
What a feast! There are four cuts of Roast Beef to choose from, they are: (in order of size) the California Cut, the English Cut, Lawry’s Special Cut, and the Diamond Jim Brady Cut. I had the “Diamond Jim Brady” cut of Roast Beef, a huge cut (on the bone) that filled me up completely, while V ordered the English Cut, which I had to help her finish. Lawry’s own special “spinning” salad, mashed potatoes with gravy on the side, and Yorkshire pudding rounded things off (literally). The food was soooo good, and the beef was done exactly right. We had a bottle of wine with our meal, and coffee with a shared dessert.
The decor is very swish, and although the aircon was freezing cold when we went in, a quiet word to the manager, and it was turned down right away.
Afterwards we headed downstairs to watch the latest 007 flick, and I was so content from my dinner that I wasn’t even bored with the movie the way I usually am with James Bond.
The damage? $4,650NT including 10% service, plus an extra $250 for the waitress who was attentive, professional and pleasant. Not cheap by a long shot, but every once in a while, definitely worth it.
Jeff,
Ever been to Lawry’s at the top of the Living Mall (Core Pacific City) on BaDe? I think you’ll like it there. Besides their famous roast beef, you’ll likely see local celebs dining at the place.
Thanks!!! Never been there yet. Is it a buffet or…? What is the avg. price per person? Also other than there roast beef is the food any good? I don’t want to go somewhere just to spend a lot of money and find out the food sucks. I’d imagine it’s okay, but what’s your experience been?
I guarantee the food won’t suck, but will you get your money’s worth? That’s another question. Can’t recall how much a person exactly (definitely four figures). The place is pretty la-di-da. Not a buffet. You sit down and get waited on with as much professional service and flair Taiwan’s servers can offer. Roast beef is their specialty, but there’re also seafood, chicken (duck?) dishes for non-beef eaters.

It’s a branch of the famous US chain. Their specialty is Prime Rib. I’ve never eaten at the US outets, but I’d say it’s probably the best Prime Rib you’re likely to find in Taiwan. It’s quite good, although I’ve had better Prime Rib in the US, but that’s probably because by nature of being a chain, Lawry’s can never be as good as an individual establishment.
It’s pricey, expect at least NT$1200 a person, and more if you have wine or order desserts. It’s not a buffet, and there isn’t much else on the menu besides the Prime Rib. There’s seafood, I think, but that’s not what you go there for. All meals come with house salad, and sides of mashed potatoes & gravy, creamed spinach, and Yorkshire pudding.
Service is excellent.
Not to put a dent in your fender but this place leaves me cold. Nothing special. I am not fond of having to watch the waitress spin the salad. Yawn and for the money there are better places. I do have friends that love it though but for me, not even near consideration.
Can someone tell me what the spinning salad is all about?
Has anyone been to Lawrys or Ruth Chris steak house since the ban on US Beef took effect. This must really impact their business - since they will have use lesser grade and different tasting meats now.
I have a salad spinner. You use it to “spin” the water off the leaves after you’ve washed them. I have no idea why they do it in front of customers at Lawry’s – maybe its their way of saying “Look how high-class we are – we wash our salad leaves.”
Sandman’s got the wrong idea. They have a salad bowl on ice - to chill it - and then add the dressing to it while spinning the bowl in the ice. They try to make it showy, but I think it’s just a little too gimmicky. Good salad, though.
Fair enough. As I said, Lawry’s Taipei isn’t the best Prime Rib I’ve had.
It would be great if you could share your recommendations for a tasty Prime Rib in Taipei that best’s Lawry’s.
Hmmmmm you got me there. I never order prime rib. I can ask around but I stick pretty much to sirloin or ribeye whenever possible. And for that, you cannot beat Muma’s. BUT for an interesting highly unique steak dish, Ihave to say that the steak at Paris 1930 (panfried) was very very fine but it is the sauce that is to die for and also in TienHsiangLo the Hangzhou restaurant in B1 also at the Ritz Landis, they gave us a steak last time with sesame sauce that was the hands down favorite of a 12-course dinner that included many many “wow” dishes.
Yeah, just isn’t the same without all the steroids, is it? Wonder if New Zeland or Austalia could be convinved to use more of them, get more chemicals in there so it doesn’t taste so different…
I went to Lawry’s a few weeks ago, and it’s still the same.
I was told that they have enough stock left to hold them over until March before they have to start using other beef. We’ll see what happens.
I went to Lawry’s a few weeks ago for the first time, I wasn’t overly impressed with the quality of their prime rib. To me their meat had too much fat around the edges and they don’t cook it as requested. The atmosphere is quite Pleasant though, if that accounts for anything. I think I’d probably go back and try a different cut of meat, but the only reason I would is because I found a ball bearing in my icecream and they gave me a two year Prefered Member card when I complained to the management.
a ball bearing???
a ball bearing in your ice cream?
Lawry’s is way overrated. Lawry’s Taiwan isn’t good. Take up Fred Smith’s suggestion and goto Muma’s.
Jack,
I guess it could have passed for a slightly larger BB also… Yep, my guess is they use an ice cream scooper that has ball bearings for turning the scoops and when they were preparing the dishing days in advance one scooper broke and some bearings landed in the food. I’m just very glad I didn’t bite into it. Shit happens, though you don’t expect it at a high class place… They certainly made up for though.
Could anyone help me find the Lawry’s Steakhouse in Taipei? As well, what would a typical meal cost?
If you google’d it, you would have found this: Lawry’s Taipei. Looks like a typical meal could set you back NTD 2500-3000 depending on appetite.
Menu & pricing
I have eaten at a Lawry’s house in other cities. Very good and very dependable.
