Part is your salary, part is your employer, part is teh governmnet. If by “subsidize” you mean the government´s money from taxes you pay, well, so are the roads and other public services. This is a socialist country.

I’m self employed, and I haven’t had to get it yet as I leave the country quite often.
If I get some emergency I got accident insurance and/or can fly to hk where I get health care basically for free as well(I’m citizen)
If I do get something serious though( which hopefully isn’t urgent) I’ll just refrain from leaving tw for 6 months(or change my visa from jfrv to something else so I don’t have to wait 6 months) so my NHI kicks in and I can get my healthcare here
Self employed at least have a chance of not opting in or of modifying their income to minimize the scale of the theft.

How is it theft?
By subsidize I mean I’m am forced to hand over a large chunk of money every month to subsidize those who don’t hand over a large chunk of money every month.
I would far prefer to pay my own way and not be part of the NHI but this is not allowed.
Due to all the leaches in the system it is now next to useless so I choose to pay for insurance and private medical care in order to provide for my family.
Lucky how? If you are genuinely ill you’ll find there’s a very finite limit to what you can take out of the NHI. Don’t expect to get cancer treated in any helpful way and don’t expect it to be there for you if you have an accident.
Lucky in that they can afford to pay for private medical insurance and/or attention? In some cases people were born lucky in most of the others they’ve worked hard to provide for themselves and their families.

Why do you have a private one? NHI coverage is not enough?
As long as you haven’t already started you still have hope, if you’re already in you’re done.
The idea of paying any of it is rough but unfortunately there’s no opt out for most of us.

To pay for extra perks like private room, private nurse -I have no human family here- and it even covers any losses due to absence from work - kind of cash back, which I use to take care of my furry children. It also covers extra cancer meds and pays you a certain amount if you cannot go back to work due to extreme illness/accident.

I have always had almost everything covered …including Cancer drugs , except for the Private room ,oh and Dental Crowns etc.
