Some folks (not here) were discussing Ted Cruz’ proposal for 蔡英文 to come make a speech… they had referred to him as ㄒㄧㄅㄢㄧㄚ and I mistakenly took that to mean a Spaniard… I was soon informed that they were calling him something a little less appealing. Is this just a case of “get your slang game up” or is this one of the downsides to zhuyin?
Ah okay I had forgotten that. Well in this case the zhuyin was arbitrarily placed so I didn’t think about it. I was corrected to think it was 西班鴨 . I assume therefore this situation involves use of zhuyin that is unorthodox, as there were (clearly) no characters present.
Anyway, the person who had posted had corrected himself – apparently, to denote the difference, there should be “ˊ” at the end so all together it is ㄒㄧㄅㄢㄧㄚ’ .
