I just did my first ever overnight cycling trip from Taipei to Luodong, heading down highway nine on the first day, staying at a hotel, then back up the north coast on the second day, through caoling tunnel and then west. I want to do another, similar trip in the next week or two, but not sure where to head: any recommendations? I can do ascents, but not massive climbs, at least not with a saddlebag full of stuff.

You could do something similar through the 7 instead than 9.
Beipu is one of the best preserved historical towns in Taiwan main island, which is not saying much anyway. You could go from Sanxia to 118 (the road south of Shimen reservoir) then to Beipu, and back through Guanxi and Daxi.

That sounds pretty great. Iād actually already planned a route to Nanzhuang, which is just a few miles south of Beipu, but has a lot of fairly cheap accommodation. The route 7 suggestion is a good one. Thanks!
