Looking for the best-tasting cakes in Taiwan

My mom’s birthday is coming up and I’m thinking of buying her a cake.
I know that there have been a lot of ‘fancy’ cake stores popping up around Taipei these days but they aren’t necessarily the best in terms of taste.

Any suggestions where I can get great-tasting cakes in Taipei? Thanks in advance!

PS. My mom prefers chocolate

My favorite has been HONG YEH cakes. But I cant remember their address. Vaguely recall it being on ren ai near shing shen south road in one of the alleys.

They have been around for a long time and have great choco cakes as well as boston pies.

Sounds divine!!! We’ve got one in Hsinchu called Aroma Bakery, run by a Canadian and a local. Great cakes and cheesecakes! They have a tiramisu cake that’s to die for!

Yes, divea is 100% right: “Black as Chocolate” is your best option. We’ve had a few of their cakes with no regrets whatsoever.

They have a store in Neihu on Ruey Kuang Rd, just one block from the Neihu Flower Market.

Not just info for you but for those travelling from Keelung or Taipei to Ginshan ,etc or back just as you cross a small bridge into the town of WANLI itself (on the old road as there are two into Wanli) you will see a 7/11 on ur left. Go a bit further and you will come to really can be considered the ONLY cafe in town and it is a very nice cafe indeed with great coffee and teas AND they happen to be cake specialists and make super good cakes. As good as the best iv had in many countries. They have a few branches in Taipei but i know not where.

But for those on a road trip out that ways, its worth a stopover for a cupa tea/coffee and a cake or two. And bring some home with you. They are delicious. Totally.

Goethe in Gongguan has good cake, but I can’t remember if they sell whole ones or not.

Mmmmm German cake shop :homer:

Wow… that looks like a real cake!

Not the gawdawful cream-and-canned-fruit-with-thin-layers-of-sponge monstrosities that one is usually subjected to in Taiwan.

They do sell whole cakes. I think you have to order in advance (at least I did). I got their lemon meringue-type cake - very good.
There’s also a guy very near there who makes French-style cakes to order - Mr Bruno, on Wenzhou Jie. They look fantastic, are pretty elaborate, and taste wonderful.

Off-topic, but when my wife and I had our Canadian wedding reception, my mother, as a small surprise for my wife, found an Asian-style cake place in Vancouver. So we got to have the, ahem, gawdawful cream-and-canned-fruit variety of cake for the wedding reception.

We were gracious, but we’ll always laugh about the misplaced kindness. One day we’ll tell mom our real opinion of such cakes.

This thread’s a welcome revelation. I’d given up on cakes in Taiwan long ago.

The Westin on Nanjing near Fuxing has a good selection of cakes to buy and take home.
