This year’s main lantern festival activities will be held in Lukang. Should be fun to see the old streets lit with lanterns and decorations.
From Changhua train station there are free shuttle buses:
Weekdays: 2pm-8pm, last return bus 10.30pm
Weekends: 10am-8pm, last returning bus 10.30pm
If you drive there will be large parking lots outside town. You can’t park in the main festival areas.

Does anyone know if the closest HSR also has shuttle buses to Lukang?
We were just there. Don’t forget to visit “Nipple Rub Lane.”

Went last night. Chinese fire drill at its finest! My GOD! They had ALL these special traffic signs all special-made up and all. About 100 meters past the relevant junctions. What a fucking JOKE! We were laughing out loud, so crapola had they done it. It was EVERYTHING we know and love about our dear hosts. The lanterns? A very very VERY minor part of the evening. (I was the only furriner present in the car, by the way – the ridicule was ALL coming from local people). Fucking CLOWNS! 
My kid got a cool LED sword, though, which was the high point for him.
Was it really not worth going or are you just being cranky? 
Pics and video I have seen look good.
The place is worth a look when the crowds are not present though. Some real nice old style home alleys and some bizarre businesses to boot, like a guy who digs up your ancestors bones, cleans them off in a hot soup and then dries and puts the bones in an urn.

Yeah, I’ve been to Lukang many times over the years. I like the place. The lantern festival, though… well… Chinese fire drill. Had some pretty good stinky dofu on a stick though. And bought the kid a sword. Could have been worse. Entertainment “with Chinese characteristics” is about the kindest thing I could say.

Nope. I (finally) managed to find one of the parking lots, absolutely NO thanks to the temporary road signs or the mouthbreathers laughingly referred to as “police.” Then we got on a bus and got dropped off near the stadium with the main lantern. The we trudged along, bolstered by the crowds of equally bored and disoriented fellow lantern festival-goers. Mobbed as FUCK, even on a Monday. The stinky dofu was OK, though. Just a bunch of practically identical lanterns, all seemingly sponsored by big business and made by convicts. A total gyp, IMO. Is this REALLY a high point of Taiwan’s festival hype? PLEASE! GOD! NO! Surely, there has to be more? Surely?
try Penghu next year. The wife and I were there years back and watched them light their lanterns in a high school stadium just past sunset. Nice breeze and long lines of lanterns catching the same air currents leaving the place. Gorgeous.
Shame. The Pingxi lantern release is sublime, and I always enjoyed the activities around CKS years ago. Would like to see the Bombing Master Handan is Taitung one year.
Oh well, I have friends who really want to go on Sunday. I have promised I will join them. Yes, I know it will be insane.
