Ma to lead Taiwan to independence?

That’s your opinion. Perhaps you need a little more experience with how politics and the government works here. If Ma had taken a strong stance against Lien at the time, he never would have had the chance to become KMT chairman and thus implement reforms. He had to tow the party line at the time, otherwise his future in the KMT and hopes for change would have amounted to nothing.

He doesn’t need to. The US will not allow such a strategically important place as Taiwan fall into Communist China’s hands. You may not “believe” or “think” so, but Taiwan’s strategic importance to the US is not up for compromise. Lien, Ma, Soong or whoever isn’t going to change that.

You really have a bad attitude whenever anyone says anything remotely positive about anyone other than who you support. I agree with most of your posts in other areas, except for when it comes to Taiwanese politics. Your attitude isn’t going to change any minds, especially mine, so I don’t think it’s necessary to continue this debate.

On the one hand we have Ma’s track record of backing down from every fight he’s been anywhere near and always toeing the line of the real power brokers. We have him tagged as a KMT snitch and silver-spoon power-elite wannabe. OTOH we have your faith that once he gets into office, he’ll change his spots and do only good, upright and brave deeds.

I might have a bad attitude. It’s possible I know nothing about geopolitics, as you so generously suggest. But I know a fairytale when I hear one. No offense intended.

I am still interested in the topic and would like you to tell us what Ma has done that makes you think he’s going to lead us into anything more difficult than a long jog.

Little Buddha hasn’t been watching Ma’s career long enough to realize that Ma is all talk and no game. Ma means well, but he has been a servant and tool of the old regime for all his life.
