Marriage between Taiwan National & Foreign national

Hello,

I would like to know from people who have experience and knowledge on marrying a foreign national in Taiwan.

I am planning to bring my girlfriend from abroad to come here for marriage and for us to settle down over her. I am Taiwan national with taiwan passport. She is foreign national with foreign passport. I already have household registration here as well.

I would like to know what documentations needed and steps we would have to take. Thank you.

What nationality does your girlfriend hold? Docs and process will depend on that.

Exactly. The nationality of the foreign spouse determines the complexity of bureaucracy one has to overcome.

She is from Myanmar.

Okay, so you’ll likely need to register your marriage first in Myanmar. My process was a bit different, but basically it goes something like this:

  1. Get married in the foreign spouse’s home country (In my case, we had to marry in the Philippines first.)
  2. Do interview at TECO
  3. Apply for a spouse visa

I had a lot of other extra steps in between, but that’s just how things work back in the Philippines. I’m not entirely sure what the marriage process is like in Myanmar, so your best bet is to check the TECO Myanmar website (and also give them a call). This page should have most of the information you need. It should be available in Burmese too, but I can’t read/write Burmese sorry  Hope it goes well for you and your gf!

One can marry in Taiwan first too. But Taiwan will require to register the marriage in the foreign spouse’s country as well, if they plan to live in Taiwan. Depends on the processes of Myanmar, marrying there first might be easier overall.

Not sure how it is in Myanmar, but when I did it, our district’s Household Registration Office straight up refused to let us register our marriage in Taiwan first. They were very adamant that we get it done in Manila first.

Also want to add that we also considered getting married in HK first (since the marriage process is faster than back home) and then applying for a spouse visa through TECO HK. Called TECO HK to ask about the procedure and was once again told “No! Get it done in Manila first”
