Members vs. Guests

If you notice the number of people online at any one time, particularly peak times, you will see that as many as two-thirds are not registered members…
Why would a person not register?

Maybe they’re just browsing and can’t be bothered logging in.

Or maybe they’re here to spy on us! :astonished:

The CIA and other intelligence operatives frequently monitor such sites as these to keep abreast of local political happenings.

Seriously, this place is by far the best news agency on this island. (Which isn’t saying much, I know, considering the competition…) If you want to know what’s going down in Taiwan right now, this is the waiguoren’s CNN.

(to paraphrase Chuck D., who said that P.E. was “black America’s CNN”).

Because they’re at work. Upper management checks what we do on the net, so I don’t want them knowing my user name.

Yeah right. Sometimes I feel it’s more like the waiguoren’s Jerry Springer Show.

It’s all comparative. During the election debacle, which place was more trustworthy and informed - Forumosa or the Taipei Times, China Post, the local television networks?

There’s a difference between information and opinion. Most expats posting here get their info from the local papers, and CNN, and simply post their opinions and theories. The CIA (I assume you’re talking about the American version?) surely has infiltrates with access to Taiwanese power-brokers and forumosa.com is low on it’s list of informed and connected resources, if at all. As for Taiwanese spying on forumosans, what will they uncover here? Posts preoccupied with “female pleasure,” people all whoopty-doo about their 150cc scooters, political debates about commentaries they read in Taipei Times? Few of us–even those with 20+ years living here–could possibly be seriously involved in serious power-broking in Taiwan. To think that forumosa.com is a serious force to be contended with seems to connotate a bit of self-flattery, an illusion of adventure, danger and excitement from the safety of your computer.
