That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. These kids grow up speaking Chinese or are bilingual, why should they be a burden?

I disagree. I have had several teachers tell me that these children are a considerable burden on the public school system. The children of these mixes generally speak the language of the mother (often Vietnamese) than the father. Also, the lower educational level of the wives and their unfamiliarity with Mandarin or Taiwanese makes it difficult to acquire basic services to help the children develop or even to academically prepare them for school.

That being said, many Taiwanese couples aren’t doing a stellar job either. Many simply leave their children with their grandparents for the day. The grandparents, who are often semi-literate at best, often just let them sit there and watch TV all day. Not exactly the best preparation either.

Maybe these peoples should check out some schools in Europe and see how people there handle classes with 80 or more % foreigners who do not even speak the local language…

Your avatar annoys me immensely for some reason Mesheel. I can’t quite put my finger as for the reason why, but its irritation grows the more I stare at it.

Oh and yes, to make my post actually relevant to the topic at hand. I have to say the minister was being quite unfair. It is not the children who are a burden on society (aren’t all children) but rather the wives.

I thought it was a pretty stupid statement when I read about it in the TT, but then I remembered how frequently the TT completely mischaracterizes someone’s statement and I figured odds are they did so in this case. Unless one reads a direct quote in Chinese, I figure it’s not fair to judge someone by the TT’s translation or description of what someone supposedly said.

Lower the standards??

It was a really stupid and offensive statement.

He asked foreign brides “not to have so many babies.” Recent figures have shown that contrary to stereotypes, foreign brides do not have significantly higher birth rates than native-born mothers, that they are married to men with a higher than average level of education, and that comparatively few are married to disabled men. The foreign brides themselves are a diverse group with varying levels of education.

The foreign brides and human rights groups protested yesterday. The Executive Yuan was seriously pissed since his statements clearly violated the EY’s policy of promoting a more diverse and tolerant society (see CSB’s 5-20 speech). The vice-minister has apologized and was verbally chastised by the Minister of Education.

The local English papers have never been credited for their accuracy.
If it is just a misquote why is the Human Rights Legislation for Immigrants and Migrants (AHRLIM) holding a protest outside the Ministry of Education?
I think it has more to do with the unending “I Love Taiwan” racial rhetoric that has become synonymous with Chen Shui Bians’s government.

At least they learn about the stock market :sunglasses:

What about us foreign husbands?
Do we lower the intelligence of the island?

I think they should make all foreign brides wear little arm bands, I don’t know, say yellow with a little star on them ?

You could also sterilise the females, hell, let’s do the males as well. Then you could make them live in one place so they’re more easily manageable. Would it work ? I wonder what the final solution might be ? Let’s ask Herr Chou.

Most of the American research shows that mixed-race children are generally above-average in most aspects. It gets me when these guys speak of one type of people to be inferior to another.

Immigrants are stupid, eh ? All the Chinese people on this island must have stupid ancestors, then. You wouldn’t think it though from the intelligent, well balanced, and open-minded people running the country today. Oh no.

For those who think this sort of chat is OK, why is it OK ? It’s OK for a Taiwanese bloke to say children of Vietnamese, Indonesian, or Chinese women are stupid ? Is it OK for me to say children of black women are stupid ? If not, why not ? If I was “Taiwanese” (however you define it) would it be OK then ?

It would be acceptable among less-intelligent Taiwanese. Is that a minority or a majority? Hard to tell, but Chou is a prime example. And he’s a member of what they like to describe as the “elite” of society. God help us.

It’s neither the children, nor the wives, but the government ministers who get paid rather high salaries and expenses out of our taxes for doing fuck all useful.

It has been shown that roughly 50% of Taiwanese are of below-average intelligence! :astonished:

Just sounds like more of the usual anti-immigrant stuff… I’m waiting for someone to declare they take local jobs, increase crime and don’t assimilate.

Well, the STUPIDEST thing I’ve heard was the Taipei Times (or something) headline a few years back “Foreigners Cause Disease and Crime.” This is the second stupidest thing. :loco:

The poll question is silly though. Chou is a civil servant–he can’t be fired.

Good point. What can we do about people like this?

The exact same thing you can do about them in the U.S. — nothing except complain. :notworthy:
