here is the link…
etaiwannews.com/Taiwan/2004/ … 292016.htm
and another one…
chinapost.com.tw/taiwan/deta … 5770&GRP=B
of course there is tons more information in the Chinese Language Daily’s…
What does this mean for all those people working in Kindergartens, but on ARC’s from Buxi-Bans… (conveniently owned by the same people who own the kindy).
Is this just more of the same-old blustering from the MOE, or is it something that will seriously affect the future of English Language Instructors in Taiwan?
Any Comments would be greatly appreciated…
Regards,
Daryl :?
Just found this update on the ICRT website…
“A SENIOR D.P.P. LAWMAKER IS DEFENDING THE GOVERNMENT’S PLAN TO BAN ENGLISH AS A SUBJECT IN ALL KINDERGARTENS AND NURSERY SCHOOLS EFFECTIVE NEXT SEMESTER.”
“IN ANNOUNCING A PLAN TO ENFORCE THE RESTRICTION … THE EDUCATION MINISTRY SAID STARTING THE STUDY OF A SECOND LANGUAGE TOO EARLY IS DETRIMENTAL TO CHILDREN BECOMING FLUENT IN THEIR NATIVE TONGUE … AND THAT THE OFFERING OF FULL-DAY ENGLISH-LANGUAGE OR BILINGUAL PROGRAMS BY BUSHIBANS BLURS THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN THEM AND LICENSED KINDERGARTENS.”
“THE ANNOUNCEMENT SPARKED A WAVE OF PROTEST FROM SCHOOL OPERATORS … WHO SAY THEY WON’T BE ABLE TO STAY IN BUSINESS.”
“D.P.P. LAWMAKER CAI HUANG-LANG YESTERDAY POINTED OUT THE PLAN HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN APPROVED BY BOTH RULING AND OPPOSITION LAWMAKERS.”
"CAI ALSO NOTED THAT BEGINNING FEBRUARY 1ST … THE TAIPEI CITY GOVERNMENT HAD ALREADY TAKEN THE LEAD IN IMPLEMENTING THE MEASURE. "
I would really appreciate some comment from some people who have read the Chinese language dailies and gotten more information on this… as if this goes through it could potentially affect a large population of English Teachers in Taiwan…
( Please reply on or before Nov. 10, 2007 )

This post over hereon OPEN WORK PERMIT HOLDERS (i.e. those with JFRV-based ARCs) being unable to work at kindies and preschools is apparently based on this law.
Bones, I don’t know what you’ve been drinking but the posts date back to 2004 … a little late to answer them I guess …
Putting the latest info up for others to read is still useful, no?
This subject is always fun to watch.
