I did a search but couldn’t find much on money orders.
I want to buy something from a company in the States. Normally I’d use a debit card but their site isn’t set up for online ordering so if you want to use a debit/credit card you have to write the details on a form and mail it to them. I’m not keen on that.
Is it possible to buy money orders in Taiwan? Or is there a company in the States from which I could buy a money order online and get it sent to the right place?
You can buy one at any bank. They cost about NTD$150-200. They are actually checks, not money orders, I believe.
Thanks Flicka. But are those checks in USD, cashable in the States?
Western Union will draft a money order for you. Cathay United has one inside, in Taipei. Costs about $10 to send to the US, but also depends on how much your money order is for.
I used them to send money to Taiwan, and you can use it to send money to the states too. It is secure, fast, and guaranteed.
Any bank that does USD forex will cut you an IMO. At BOT you apply with the same form as a wire transfer.
I have bought a few things from vendors who don’t do online transactions by simply giving them my cc details and letting them process the sale manually. However, not all US cc transaction agencies will accept cards that were issued overseas. In that case an IMO or PayPal might be the only way.

And this company has a form you can print out and put your CC details on that. But I don’t really fancy doing that.
Yes, you can but the amount had better be pretty big as the cost of doing this is quite high. There is a thread on this somewhere, but I am too busy right now to look for it!
I put smallish checks into my US broker. It takes a while to do the round trip. 2 weeks to get a check here, then 2 weeks back to the US to get it deposited. But it’s free that way.
I don’t want to think about the costs, inc. handling fee ($s per check), commission, exchange rate, and all for what?
Open a broker account or a US$ account in the States if you are going to be doing this a lot.
I think it’s six months usually, but that’s a UK rule. I don’t know if the US has the same rule or not.
Actually, not really. It’s a trip to the post office (that can be avoided, if you already have the stamps). It’s certainly more efficient than paying to cash a check at a bank here, once the account is opened. For the first time, though, yes it would be a pain.
1 Once a check/money order has been printed, for how long is it valid? I seem to remember six months – is that correct?

I think it’s six months usually, but that’s a UK rule.
