Month-Long Get-a-Way Locations

I always here stories about folks who go off to a place for a month or so or recreating and relaxing. I guess they are not Brazillionaires, so the places must be fairly cheap.

Where are they? SCUBA diving locations given preference here.

Koh Tao, Thailand

Psych wards…

Fly into Fiji at Nadi. Catch a taxi to First Landing Resort. Reasonable cabins and for about 400 U.S. you can charter a boat for most of the day. They will take you to some of the most beutiful scuba sites and serve you lunch on a secluded sandy island, complete with starched tablecloth and . . . the fooooood. WOW!

Cook Islands - Fly into Roratonga and spend the first night. Then catch a charter flight to Aitchitaki. It’s a small island with a tidal pool in the middle. A month on this island and you wont want to leave. Rent a motorbike and chase pigs around the island, scuba or snorkle in the tidal pool. In the eve - sit with a bottle of local rum and swear that you will never leave.

per month??

If you are going to be there for more than a few days, expect to pay about 40.00 U.S. per night for the 2 queen size bed cabin. Clean, comfortable and secluded. I have a bunch of pics if you want to see. PM me and I will try to email them. I got layed over for 8 hours on a business trip from Arizona to Brisbane. I and my secretary sat around the damned airport at Nadi for the 8 hours in the sweltering heat. It was the same layover on the way home but I pulled the company credit card out and we went exploring. The taxi driver stopped at first landing so we could get a cold drink. About 5 minutes in the open air bar and we sent the taxi driver packing, rented a cabin and chartered a boat for the next day. I called the boss and told him the airplane broke so we would be a week late.
One of the best weeks I have ever spent anywhere.

Geez, I read that as 400.00$ a night at first glance!!

That’s one of the funniest stories Ive ever heard btw. :bravo:

You checked into a cabin on a remote tropical island with your secretary? On the company credit card? For a week?

Nice one.

per month??[/quote]

US$13/day would get you some comfortable digs in many a place in Southeast Asia.

Forget the Full moon party, that’s for kids. Little JD son can be entertained by joining a local muay thai school.

JD: Palawan, Philippines. I’d recommend going up to Port Barton and expolring the islands in the area. Very inexpensive.

Also Koh Lipe/Koh Bulon in the far south of Thailand. Koh Lipe is better known and more expensive. Koh Bulon seems to be very popular with Europeans with families who stay for longer periods. It’s cheaper than Lipe too.

HGC,

Thanks for the link. Wow, what a place!

Which one (or two) of the resorts/places to stay would you recommend?

Cheers - Stan

I’d reccomend a beachside bungalow on Had Yao (long beach). It’s to the north, around half an hour from the port and relatively isolated. Not much to do but swim, snorkel and chill. If you want to dive, they;ll send a song thauw (cross between a car and a bus) around in the morning to give you a lift to the dive boats. Or sometimes the boat will pull up to the beach.

What’s the baht exchange rate?

Almost the same as the Taiwan dollar.

Koh Phangan is off Koh Samui,. If you get bored you can always wander over there. Koh Samui is serious tourism, but in a very relaxed setting. Just donl;t go riding a motorbike there. The number of people killed on the roads is astonishing.

Alternatively, you can take the boat to Koh Tao. kohtao.com/

The one drag is getting to Koh Samui from Bangkok. Bangkok Airways owns the airport and has a monopoly on the flights. Alternatively an overnight train to Surat Thani and then the boat.

I did my dive course at Koh Tao. Fantastic diving with incredible marine life. I saw a turtle on my first dive, for example. It is also what you might call rather relaxed regarding certain substances.

Great stuff HGC!

Now, how about Bali?
