Motion sickness

How would you prepare for it? Especially a large boat for the first time.
My kids have always been ok with Dramamine but just for bus trips which they still need. Wife gets it horribly on boats.
My son has an upcoming boat trip to Matsu on a military boat which will apparently have plenty of diesel smells and smells from previous puking and maybe a 10k march to the base on arrival, so want to prepare for the worst in case the Dramamine isn’t enough.
Will be asking a doctor but just want to get suggestions first.
And what about stomach/food experience? Does ginger really help settle the stomach? Saltine crackers or any other tricks that work for you?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I get bad motion sickness on boats, too. Here are some things your kid can do.

Pill: Take a motion sickness pill at least 30-40 minutes prior to boarding.

Food: Stay on an empty stomach prior to, and throughout, the ride (nothing to throw up). Do not become partially full, as the food will swish around the stomach. Also, do not drink any liquids for the same reason. It’s better to be hungry and thirsty than sick. If he is already starting to feel sick, then completely filling up his stomach with bread will help. Don’t leave room in the stomach for food to swish around, and don’t drink.

Finally, if you can, purchase one of these motion sickness bands. I haven’t tried it myself, but my friend has one and swears by it. He gets bad motion sickness in cars and boats, and says it instantly goes away as soon as he puts on the band.

Motion sickness medicine seems to be either made of meclizine or dimenhydrinate. The later is what’s in dramamine.

I’ve taken both before, and both worked ok, but aside from not getting sea sick, they both have other effects, such as senses getting a bit dull, and drowsiness. These effects feels even more pronounced when I took dimenhydrinate. Meclizine is said to last longer, so if you are going on long boat ride, more than 4 hours, then meclizine is probably the better choice.

There are also patches that contains scopolamine, I’ve never tried those before, but I hear they are even more effective and lasts up to 3 days. The downside seems to you have to apply the patch a lot earlier before the trip.

How do they work? Apply tiny electric shocks? It seems smart watches have the same contacts with the skin. If so, can we get an app to do the same time?

Saw their Amazon pages, and they said it uses the electrodes to send signals to the nervous system.

In my area of work I’ve had plenty of time on boats and occasionally after long periods landside have been sea sick the first few days back.

It might be personal but for me I strongly disagree about an empty stomach. I always found that a proper breakfast (not crazy full) made me feel much more settled than having nothing. I would also avoid drinking coffee beforehand, that always made things worse for me.

From witnessing me land-lubbing friends after spending time at sea, absolutely this:

Plenty of sailors swear by these:

Probably the patches you place behind the ear. Seems to be effective:

Drink lots of beer on the return route. Will slow the motion sickness while your bed is rocking after the trip.

:beers:

I believe it is acupressure.

This one seems to be electrical stimulation rather than acupressure, but similar principle.

I rarely get travel sick (it needs to be really rough boat or bus rides), but I’ve tried the median nerve pressure thing in the past just using my finger and my impression was that it had a positive effect. I doubt I’d be willing to shell out US$100 for a device to do it though.

I digress, not checking the provided link. The bracelets were passed by a guru after my wife had a great sea bass harvest, only followed by a tumultuous upper gi spasm.

I get motion sickness from watching certain YouTube videos. Some camera work is really shit and I get sick watching it. I’m not sure if meds like Dramamine will relieve it.

It doesn’t happen all the time but sometimes after eating I can get sick watching videos. Worst is ones where the video just pans around and around like a drunken guy.

Thanks . That very helpful. So being as it’s a 10 hour trip then maybe need to carry bread in case.
Maybe no time to order a band.

Thanks. The dimenhydrinate has always worked for him with minor side effect like drowsiness…and really no time to test the other to see if it also does…we were thinking just take more frequently. But we’ll ask anyway. May ask about patches also. Maybe I’ll ask at the pharmacy today actually.
A friend took those on long flights and said they were very good

That’s the retail price on their official website, but I believe my friend got his on Amazon (perhaps an older model?) for less.

Yeah, and perhaps some saltine crackers as you said. Anything dense that will pack the stomach.

Also, bring a couple more pills.

His uncle who did the trip years ago for his military service there told him better just get sleeping pills in addition to motion sickness pills because it’s a horrible trip on the military boat.
I really doubt a doctor is going to prescribe something like Ambien and it’d be risky not knowing the effects and being on a big boat first time.
But I think we’ll ask the doctor about some very low dose Xanax. Anyone ever try that combination?

What kind? I’ve heard some types of media can cause seizures

Just read pretzels also. I’ll see if I can find any.
Just talked to a doctor I know on the phone and he said for serious motion sickness he usually prescribes a cocktail of
PROCHLORPERAZINE + Diphenidol.
I’ll ask the clinic doctor.

This one:

It makes me sick in some instances because the camera keeps panning up and down and side to side, very quickly.

Most professionally done videos do NOT do this because having half your audience throwing up isn’t good for your ratings.

Doesn’t make me dizzy but definitely not easy to watch. Camera must be mounted on his head

I seen plenty of videos like this. Instant unsubscribe if I see this kind of camera work.

It doesn’t make you sick all the time but at certain states, it can.
