Weather is hot…the water is cool and typhoon season isn’t here yet.
Had my first long swim in the mountains today and it was nice.
I go here:
Notice in the pic how clear the water is…it looks very shallow…but it’s deep enough to dive head first into(in a couple of spots)…it’s just that clear.
It’s just on the southern outskirts of San Xia. Which is on the 3 North of Da Xi and south of Tapei. If you look on a map you…umm a pic is worth a 1000 words…here is a pic of the area.
So on the map below “Sanshis” (San Xia) you go up the 7 “squiggle” which will later connect to the 7…up to the 4km marker…and to your left is a turn off which is directly above the swimming spot in the above pic.
Easy, eh? The 7 squiggle is called the 7 E…as in “a,b,c,d…E” .
Anyway the water was clean and clear…and with googles on I could watch the fish swimming around me as I swam.
If you go…I highly recommend googles, and some type of shoes or sandals to wear in the water. Rocks can be sharp…and there are plenty of odd rocks in the water that googles would allow you to see while swimming.
Mordeth, stop telling everybody where the swimming hole is. Next thing we know there will be a happy hour there or something!
I know exactly where you’re talking about. I was going to ride up there today and cool off. I go to the place near the top end ofthe road where there aren’t many people…
Thanks Sandman, I can see those. Strange that I can’t the originals. In any case, this looks like the river that runs along the 7 squiggle before you get to the turn off for Full Moon Park. Is it?
WTF am I saying? It looks like every fairly large river in the north.
This spot isn’t much more than knee-deep, and the KTV noise from down the road is still a bit too loud, so I’m still looking.
Any southerners care to share some suitable spots east of Gao Xiong? I have some decent Gao1 Shan1 di4 tu2, but the resolution is not good enough to really pinpoint the holes which are deep enough for swimming.
cheers

Nan’ao in Yilan county has some fantastic swimming spots. If you’re riding you scooter/driving down the Suao-Hualian highway, head west once you get into town. The few roads in town all converge to the river, which is very clean and has spots deep enough to swim in. Thankfully it’s far enough away from Taipei to keep out a lot of the riff-raff even on the weekends.

I’m sure the local epxats have many more but Maolin National Park isn’t far away and it has great spots to swim in including the pools beside the outdoor hot springs in Dona.
We swam in it all last summer, AFAIK, it’s still there.
The road is completely repaired all the way through to where it connects to the 7. According to Mr. He, the section from the Bei hen side to the campground has a few iffy spots, but is passable.
