Movie/Video software that plays Chinese subs easily:
As the title suggests… I can’t seem to find a decent video software that can play movies with chinese subs (SRT file). Yes I am talking torrented movies and downloaded subs.
1.) You need to check what text encoding your .srt file is in. It might be UTF8 or Big5 or whatever the hell simplified Chinese is. The easiest way to check is to drag the .srt file onto a web browser and cycle through the different text encodings under the View menu.
2.) Under the Subtitle preferences in VLC, set the Default Encoding to whatever you found in the first step.
3.) Then you need to choose a font that has Chinese characters in it. For whatever reason, I have better luck with Unicode fonts than any specific Chinese fonts. I’m on a Mac and I use Arial Unicode MS.
Because you’re seeing blocks and not random gibberish characters, my guess is that you didn’t choose a proper font.
On OS X, I’m able to get the Chinese srt subtitles working with VLC, Movist, Plex, and even Quicktime Player.
Try what alidarbac said. I used to have the same problem as the OP did with VLC, and assumed I needed a different program. But then doing something with VLC’s settings made it work well for me. Unfortunately, it was long enough ago that I don’t remember what I actually did.
I’ve always turned to KMPLayer for Chinese subtitles back in the day when my wife needed Chinese subtitles.
Luckily, these days she can watch stuff with English subtitles.
I think as Alidarbac suggested, this problem can be solved without installing anything new. (1a) Change the subtitle encoding in player settings to “Big 5” (or “GB2312” for simplified) or (1b) Convert the subtitle file to UTF8 (and make sure the encoding is set accordingly); it’s also possible you need to (2) change subtitle font to “Arial Unicode MS” or “MS JhengHei.” I still recommend MPC-HC as a good player though.
VLC usually doesn’t have encoding problems with .ass (SubStation Alpha) subtitle files, but for .srt, I usually have to fiddle with it before they work right.
