They didn’t even offer me contract free for a year.
But why does Taiwan providers needs to force people to constantly be signed to a contract. In other countries I’ve lived, they don’t force you.
Makes me also wonder how does my local friend not have to sign any new contract (for a few years already) and still get unlimited data unlimited speed ?
Could be worse, you could be a Canadian or a Canadian returning to Canada only to find that they have absolutely zero prepaid data services for tourists at the big telcos. While postpaid contracts all have data caps.
It’s available in person or on their website which is a pain, but at least once you figure it out you can take care of it at home.
I’m on pre-paid and you get 1GB for 119NTD and after that it drops to unlimited 1Mpbs which is a bit slow and Spotify and Youtube barely work, but they do work. That’s pretty damn good for 119/month.
I wanted to buy an unlimited internet SIM for 3 months, but they refused since I already have a pre-paid SIM. Only one SIM per person!? New rule since I bought additional SIMs before… When I get around to it I may go to Chuang Hwa to get their unlimited tourist SIM unless they also find an arbitrary reason to refuse me.
That’s changed now but you need to go with a big 3 carrier’s flanker company. They even have a Chatr booth at the airport for tourists.
You can get prepaid data with Chatr, Lucky, or Public mobile as well as Freedom now for a decent price. The only catch is the speeds tend to be crappier than a monthly plan but still decent for most.
Speaking of which Taiwan used to have cheap prepaid plans for foreigners targeting the SEA community in their market and stores. $499 prepaid card for unlimited 4G. Not sure if they still do that.
Last time I tried to get another SIM card just for data I was told Taiwan now has a rule that foreigners are only allowed one SIM card per passport to protect the public against scams. That was with 大哥大 but I got the feeling it applies to all carriers. Any workarounds?
