Is it possible for a person with an Easy Card to hop on a bus/MRT and slap their card say 3 times, allowing their 2 friends to ride as well? And then subsequently slap the same card 3 times upon alighting at their destination?
Not 100 percent sure but I think not for some obvious wax on wax off distinctions. I just pay coins ever since I put 1000 nt on the card and five minutes later the card died suddenly of natural causes with my 1000 on it.
That can be done if you are paying by the trip, you can pay for others as well, but not if you are on Tpass as Tpass is only for one person. Otherwise people would game the system.
Also if your easy card died with money on it, take it to the MRT station and they can refund the money.
But if you are using up 1000 worth of public transport money in less than a month then it’s foolish to not buy the Tpass.
I’ve done it before on busses in emergencies, but you need to ask the bus driver and he needs to do something to allow the machine to read your card twice. It’s a bit of a pain, probably better to just get Easy Cards for all your friends.
Also when I seen it done it was before you had to tap on and tap off. I don’t think it was ever intended for the easy card to be shared with multiple people at all.
I mean what you could do is have an easy card with a t pass on it, and maybe you can give that to a friend to use (though I really don’t recommend it unless you trust the friend, he could rent a youbike and just not return it, meaning you’re on the hook for it). But you cannot have 2 people use the same easy card at the same time. Back when they had the 1280 pass, if you just exited the turnstile, then quickly entered again it will lock the card. This is to prevent from say having multiple people doing relay races with it, and having the card shared with multiple people. I don’t know what the timer is, I think it’s 5 minutes.
But I’ve exited then reentered quickly because I exited the station, realized it was wrong (or had to use the bathroom because it was outside the turnstile), then reentered, and that never triggered anything.
If you have a receipt. The guy just told me, sorry that happens sometimes do you have a receipt? I said no and he said je suis desole me cest maintenant un mei ban fa, bu ke neng, type de situation. I fell to my knees raising my hands to the heavens and crying nooo! Why me? Kind of like a highlander post decapitation scene. And I vowed from that day till the end of my days, to rely on the coins.
All I know is that I topped up the card and the card came up as malfunction on the very next swipe and the guy in the little kiosk told me the money was gone. I haven’t touched one since. Maybe there are protections on them but this is the first I’m hearing about that.
Card is long gone. This anecdote is from years ago. Coins have worked just fine since. The dissapearing credit was a deal breaker for the ‘easy’ part of the easy card.
Well good advise for the future if you ever need to use the easy card, especially if you get the t pass because you can save thousands of you take public transportation a lot. Taipei main station to laoxijie on the airport mrt is 200 per trip by the way.
