This discussion on multi-region DVD players is full of helpful advice, but I’m a bit stumped on what’s happening with a series of discs I bought from Amazon. They’re region 1 discs.
I put them in my DVD player, which was set as multi-region and then after some whirring noises, the screen reads STOP and does nothing further.
I read in the other thread that some DVD’s require your player to be set on a region (not 0) in order to play. Does it sound like that’s what’s happening?
There was also stuff in the thread about TV’s not being multi-regional in Taiwan, but since the disc isn’t playing, I don’t think that’s the problem.
Any help is appreciated.
OK.This is DEFINITELY nothing to do with your TV, but rather the DVD player (or possibly the DVDs).
Do you have the option of trying them on a friend’s multi-region DVD player, by any chance? (You’re welcome to try on mine. It’s a VERY forgiving player).
If it’s a region thing, you always have the option to make a back-up, which will strip out the region lock.
Aside from STOP, does it show anything else? Usually, if it’s a region problem, it’ll give some region error message.
Take a look at the DVDs and see if there’s any physical irregularities on the disc and then give it a try in someone else’s player.
I ended up giving away my Pantiac that was good for everything but foreign-bought disks and bought an “LG” brand DVD player from 3C.
Their slogan is [edit: You got disk? It plays.] “Got disk. It play.” And, so far, it’s true.
Fantastic
(Must’ve asked ICRT how to say that)
Could just be a crap disc – try it in another machine first. If all 3 discs are doing the same thing, maybe they got left out in the sun, or maybe you have a problem with your player.
An English friend of mine gave me a great copy of Eraserhead, but it was Region 3 while my computer (which doubles as my DVD player) is set up for region 1. You’d think a computer would play whatever, but the DVD jerks have it set up to interfere with that. I downloaded a different media player program (not WinDVD or Windows Media Player) that was reccomended me and tried it, and it worked. If your disc isn’t screwed up I can try to track down the name of that program again – don’t have it on the top of my head here in the internet cafe.

Of course, you could just use: Remote Selector

It works a treat on playing my region coded discs… You just have to start the program before your player.
I’ve tried it on region 1, 3, and 4 discs. Played them all.
Very neat.
