My computer crashed this morning!

Turned it on, got connected and then suddenly the screen froze and mouse wouldn’t work. Had to switch it off from the power button and after several tries of restarting all I get on my screen is “No signal”. Also when I turn it on I don’t hear the usual beep.

Luckily I have a spare which I bought off someone a few months ago and it started right up.

I no very little about fixing computers but hope I can get the other one running ASAP as I have important documents on it I need to get to today.
Any suggestions on getting it to start up???

Thanks for any advice.

Your video card is loose. Mine does the exact same thing sometimes. Pull it completely out and then stuff it back in again. And since you have the box open, replug everything else you see.

ok! I’ll try that in a few. Makes sense as my other monitor started acting up last week and I replaced it with this other one I got with an old backup computer recently I’m on now.
Hope it works. Thanks!

Ok, I tried it and it still isn’t working…but at least now I am getting the beep noise when it turns on which I hope is a good sign.

Would this suggest a bad video card?

The beep is usually coded to indicate possible errors, like a short and long beep has a different meaning than two short beeps etc… What each beep sequenze means depends on your BIOS.

Thanks Rascal. Well at first there was no beep at all. Then just a single beep which I was happy to hear.
Anyway reinserting the video card didn’t fix it, so then I tried just removing the video card and it worked without it.
So I guess this means the card is bad but I can still run without it as long as I’m not using any heavy graphics?

Do you also have an onboard graphics card?
If so, it may be all you need, unless you’re playing games.

Some computers specs would be useful at this stage.

If you mean built into the motherboard, I guess it must as the monitor started working without the card. I recall the guy I bought this backup one from helping me get that other one running and mentioning something about that.
Seems to work ok but I havn’t tried any videos yet…and I don’t play games so hopefully no problem.
See how it runs the next day or so.

Try the card in another PC. If it works, then your MB might have problems.

Maybe a bad mega-byte.
