…but now it’s getting serious. She’s been sneezing for almost two weeks now. I recently started noticing blood on the floor…she was in heat not too long ago…so I didn’t think too much of it. But now I realize her constant sneezing is causing nose bleeds. I took her to the vet and he tested her for 3 different blood sicknesses…came out negative…and cost me 500nt. He wanted to give her some pills…but I try to use medicine as a last resort. He guesses she might have a tick…or a leech (she went swimming recently) in her nose. He says that if so…it will eventually come out on it’s own. When he looked in her nose he said that the left nostrel…and the left only…was raw looking and red. So it’s not some kind of cold…since it only affects one nostrel.
I’ll put her on some meds this weekend if there is no improvement by then…but since he doesn’t know what the problem is…what kind of meds will he give her?
Could there be an insect/tick stuck up there, an infected grass seed? A splinter of wood? My dog stuck her nose into anything and had all sorts of bizarre nasal injuries.
The first dog i rescued got a whole family of leeches nesting in its nose. It would most likely need to anaesthatized in order to get them out, but make sure the vet takes a thorough look and doesn’t leave any behind.
I know of a better vet in Taoyuan. I’ll borrow the money and take her there within the next few days.
The first Vet said if it was a leech it would fill with blood and then when it was fat enough shoot out from one of the sneezes. He used a tool to look in her nose…and didn’t see any though.
Could it be the new canine virus? I hate to think it might be, but you could ask your vet about it. There’s an article about it in today’s New York Times, and I made a separate posting about this new disease. I’m worried because I’ve heard that my friend’s dog recently died from the virus in Taipei. Good luck to you and your puppy.
Well since it’s just one nasal cavity that’s “infected” I doubt it’s anything viral…never heard of a flu or virus only affecting half of the nose. But I could easily be wrong. That article you worte mentioned some drugs that work but aren’t licensed for dogs…you could probably just go to a pharmacy here tell them your situation and they’d sell you the drugs you need. I know of a few that will give you whatever you want if they have it and you know what it’s called.
Sneezing problem ended. Today while looking at my dog I noticed a long black wormish thing hanging out of her nose. I grabed it with my hand but it shot back in her nose. I took her to the vet…and luckily it decided to stick it’s head back out on it’s own while at the vet’s. So he used some plier thingies…and pulled it out.
She would have gotten it while swimming in the mountains with me. And it would have been very very small to begin with… and slowly as it’s size increases it begins to look for a new home and comes out on it’s own.
I kept the little guy…named him “Frank”. Plan on putting him in my roommate’s nose (while he’s sleeping) which has no feeling from his younger “party” days. I hope it will be happy there.
I am sorry for the pain and discomfort that your dog suffered but your description is definately amusing.
Just glad I am not your housemate.[/quote]
It wouldn’t have been in pain – you can’t feel leeches feeding on you – but I have a feeling Mordeth will be if he follows through on his evil plan.
