My old boss won't give me my tax receipts and

Here’s the deal:
I quit my old job in the fall, 2003. my old boss never took out my tax money. I’d worked there for a few years, and always just paid a big chunk every May.
I know that ain’t a good way. this is one reason I quit. her dishonesty is another reason.

Now it is tax time and she hasn’t sent me my paperwork. many calls to her finally got this result: “oh, the accountants didn’t add in your numbers. you don’t have to pay this year. you will have no problems”

Bullshit, I’m sure, but what to do?

I don’t have a problem paying taxes. I’m enjoying a safe city and running water, etc. I am responsible. but I’m not inclined to get screwed over by her.

Advice, please!

This has happened to me before. When you file taxes, you may fill in the amount of income you earned at that job on your tax form, and put “0” for the amount of tax withheld. You’ll then calculate your taxes based on that amount, which means you’ll pay tax for this amount.

The problem is that even though you point this out quite loudly to the tax girls, the chances of your old boss getting in trouble for this kind of behavior are minimal. After all, “it’s our job to add up the numbers, not catch wrongdoers”, etc. etc.

I’m sure there is someplace you could report the company for non-compliance. My boss is always moaning about how much the company would be fined if the taxes aren’t done right – hmmm…why is it that my withholding for last year was “zero” from his company and I’m a regular employee with my visa through them…but that’s another question entirely…

thanks for the advice.

i have no paperwork at all to present - i can just go to the office and give them a number?

it seems like i should have some document, and my number would be a guess, at best.

i should like to report her. she’s puting me in an odd spot, just to satisfy her greediness.

My first year here, my (then-ex) boss lied about the tax refund on the 20% tax rate, after it down to the normal 6%. She filed my taxes and kept giving me the runaround about the refund check, stalling me for a couple of months. I finally went down to the tax office myself and they told me they’d already sent it out over a month ago to the address of my former school. So I angrily but calmly drove over to her office and asked her to hand the check over to me. Knowing the gig was up, she forked it over. I guess she thought she was somehow going to figure out a way to cash the 40,000 NT check herself.

This is illegal. Complain to your local labor board. I have posted on how to do this elsewhere in these forums.
