So I was wondering if it was possible to get an national ID card.
For context, I was born in Taiwan from a Taiwanese mother almost 30 years ago. I had a household registration number and a passport. I have been adopted and am now Canadian.
A few months ago, I went to TECO and discovered that I could renew my Taiwanese passport from when I was born. Which I did and in the said passport, there is the same household registration number.
Now I was wondering if I was eligible to get my national ID card and the step to it?
I know that I must reinstate my household registration number and have a permanent address, which the orphanage said I could use.
Reach out to the Overseas Community office in your country. They should give you the latest guidelines.
Just for the record: how old are you, and are you male or female? Asking because of the little detail of compulsory military service for males under 30.
Your Household Registration Office (HHRO) is responsible for your ID, also meaning it can only be done in Taiwan. Add: And you must do this by entering Taiwan on your Taiwanese passport or you can’t move in.
It’s also likely your HHR is moved out for not being in Taiwan for more than 2 years.
If so, You need to move in your HHR by getting a Taiwanese address, either by renting or buying a place in Taiwan or going on a friend or relative’s address in Taiwan (or the orphanage as you mentioned).
Once you move in your HHR,the HHRO will issue you an ID.
(Note:If by some chance your HHR is still moved in, go to the HHRO of your last address and they will issue you an ID)
Also recommend getting the 自然人憑證 ecitizen-id from the HHRO at the same time (also same day issue) if you want to do certain ID related transactions online. One example is applying for you HHR transcript online.
Np, it’s just the NHI that requires you to wait 6 months. You can get your ID card the day you land if you are able to get to the HHRO during office hours.
Enter Taiwan on your Taiwanese passport (important).
Get whatever documents the orphanage can give you as permission to use their address as your HHR address. (they probably know what is needed)
Go to your HHRO to do your moving in procedure (遷入戶籍)and get your Taiwan ID made at the same time.
