Nervous retail workers keep attempting to give me too much change

On several occasions retail workers have attempted to give back too much change, for instance if I spend $700 and give them $1000, they will attempt to hand back $700 as change.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this standard across the board, or does dealing with a foreigner make some retail workers nervous?

This keeps happening to me in both retail and food and beverage settings.

I am given the wrong change all the time (both too much and too little). I correct them each time because I have a habit of figuring out the change in my head and trying to get rid of the change in my pocket. I look very Asian so I don’t think it’s nervousness. Just people are bad at math. It’s actually quite good here because when I give an odd amount of money to as to avoid getting back a bunch of 1 nt, for example, they can almost always follow right along and know exactly what I’m doing. But I do run into mistakes quite often.

It is happening at national stores…. Surely their POS system tells them the change amount.

So far it hasn’t happened at a small business

People are getting worse at handling money.

This could become really expensive for some of these workers. If they are forced to make good on errors.

Actually had one older lady exclaim that I must have learned to do that in Taiwan because other countries don’t understand it…

Perhaps caused by you carrying a big knife in your other hand. Try not waving the knife around and yelling as you enter the store.

You should expect them to be nervous, you do know that foreigners petrol bomb shops when they get the order wrong, or run out of ketchup.

I feel it was an appropriate response, given the circumstances. Judge didn’t agree.
