Itâs obviously not something youâd want to do with a bank account or anything important, but for something like booking a bus ticket (Iâm not sure why youâd even need an ID number for thisâŚ), I wonder how illegal itâd be to simply subtract 7 from the second character (denoting gender) and fix the checksum (last character), then, if someone from the bus company complains, wing it and complain that their website isnât working properly for foreignersâ government-issued ID numbers? The rest of the characters and details would obviously match, so theyâd know itâs you.
Maybe itâs a bad idea. I remember reading somewhere about it being forbidden to use fake ID numbers, but as a workaround/form of protestâŚ
ID number is for collecting the ticket in person. Book online and then show them my booking and ID to collect the ticket.
Iâd rather not risk it and somehow get my ticket cancelled and seat taken by someone waiting to fill in any empty seats. Itâs pretty annoying though because typically when Iâm forced to used my passport number staff often expect me to show my passport and get confused when I show my ARCâŚwhich has my passport number on it, as verified by the Republic of China govt. Then they usually need to call in back to the manager or boss to see if Iâm allowed to show just my ARC for my passport number and usually itâs fine. Itâs just a really annoying hassle.
I suppose that makes sense yeah. I was thinking along the lines of a not-sold-out bus ticket still needing to be paid for, where itâd be easier to take the attitude of âthatâs me and your system is shit, so fix the problem or youâre not getting my moneyâ.
Anybody know how much the GT deposit is if you donât have a guarantor? And, do they then deduct your monthly bill from that deposit, or do they just keep it until the contract ends?
Well, when even the gov doesnât update their own literature⌠according to the National Taxation Bureau istructions leafleet the ARC no is still 2 letters and 8 numbers⌠(just received this with my tax return form to be filled as I am self-employed)
Also, I might now understand where the morojic CTBC ID number for foreignersâ online banking comes from.
On this leafleet you can see that the taxpayers code no is 8 numbers and 2 letters composed as the western birthday of the taxpayer and then the first 2 letters of the name as reported on the passport⌠no one ever told me this, I just saw this now and it is completely pointless tbh, another number I guess NO ONE is aware of.
Yup! I learned it when I had to use it to get a CTBC bank account. I got the CTBC bank account because I wanted to be able to pay my CTBC credit card online (the credit card was fairly easy to get, the bank account less so). However, I canât pay my CTBC credit card with my CTBC bank account, because theyâre linked to different ID numbers. So the CTBC account sits, useless, with a couple hundred NT in it. (And I set up my post office account to allow transfers to the CTBC visa, so I can pay the bill online that way.)
I do pay my CTBC card online via CTBC account: I set the card as a beneficiary in the bank account and just remit the statement balance. Convenient? Not at all, but itâs CTBC, they donât make many logical things
The only time I came in contact with that code was when claiming my parents as dependents on my tax return. They donât have an UI number in Taiwan as theyâre not Taiwanese and live overseas. So I had to compute a taxpayer code for them.
Not specifically a new number issue, but the new mobile tax declaration app they released this year doesnât work for foreigners. It says only national IDs supported.
I couldnât give a toss about filing taxes with my phone personally, but itâs kind of a joke for the government to be releasing new software like this after forcing us all to get new numbers in purportedly the same format* for this very reason.
(*But not really - need to keep the ability to discriminate!)
I was trying to use the phone because the lady at the tax office told me to use the phone app. But then after I tried it, it failed. So I have to wait in line. I never tried filing online, I donât have a card reader and my phone isnât registered to me (itâs a business line so I can expense it)
no need, you can file just with your ARC and passport number. I have the reader and the digital certificate, but it is so shite that I use it only with the credit centre to check my credit score.
It took me 10 mins this morning, from opening the browser to paying online with credit card and getting the payment slip downloaded. Very easy and nice UI too, was impressed. My first tax declaration and payment in TW, even better than HK!
For tax audit purposes I preferred the paper method a few years ago. If the local tax office stamps they approved certain income as AMT excluded income you can be sure theyâre right. When you file online, the central tax office might play hardball and recategorize it.
