New Law 01/01/2014: No More Scooter Registration Renewal

Went to the DMV on Bade Road today. Both my scooters had expired registration cards.

From what I was told (and from what I did), as of January 1st 2014, private scooter owners will no longer need to renew their registration. I don’t know if this applies to cars, I’ve never owned one in TW.

This is, of course, only for renewals, not re-registrations for owner transfers and what not.

They said that even though the registration card is expired, it is now a non issue. You pay your taxes and tickets through the mail and keep the expired registration in the vehicle because it is no longer considered ‘expired’

Anyone else have this experience? Heard about this? Know more details?

This is what happened to me today, but it seems different DMVs give out different information from time to time.

I have never renewed my scooter registration… and i have been in Taiwan for 9 years… i didnt know i had to… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

This is why I’m not confident as to whether or not this is really a new law.

I’ve only been a scooter owner for ~3 years, so last year was my first time renewing my registration card. I assumed (based on my home country) that when the registration card had an expired date on it, it was time to go and get a new one. Why else have an expiration date? When I went, they processed my taxes and printed me a new registration card with a future expiration date.

When I went to do it again today, they said my registration is valid forever; a new law. They also said if I don’t pay my tickets and taxes, they’ll have it extracted from my bank account and/or have my registration revoked.

Again, I’m looking for anyone who knows anything. Thanks for the input omerojs. :sunglasses:

Just realized my scooter registration appears to be expired since May.

So no need to go and try to renew registration right?

Why should one need a new card every year? it’s a cost … just pay at 7-11 or any other convenience store, post office, bank and keep the payment slip. Easy! In more developed countries they have this system since ages, now they added real-time license plate check through road side and mobile cameras to check wether you paid fines, tax and registration every year. If not they keep it from your tax return each year or void your drivers license when not paid (in Belgium).

In Taiwan they should renew drivers licenses every 10 years instead of 6 … 6, stupid number.

According to this article from the Taipei City Motor Vehicles Office, from 2013 onwards, private cars & scooters/motorcycles no longer need to renew their Vehicle registrations.

just a note on this. you don’t need to pay registration but you do need to pay taxes and insurance. Each of these are something like 600NT/yr and you should get billed in the mail although it will probably be in Chinese. You get your new tabs when you renew your insurance. If you haven’t paid anything (like possibly tango) then you need to go and figure out what you owe (not much).

Thanks so much for clarifying. I’m late, nothing received in the mail, and will go check, then post back here.
