New Years 2026 Meals and leftovers

So did you have? I had lots of pork and fish (last night, New Years eve, with leftovers for tomorrow it seems plus plus extras from neighbors (more meat!), try post left overs photos later. Nice long holiday (but still some work at home, as overseas is not a holiday)

I’m lucky enough to not have any. I really don’t want food that has been 12 hours at room temperature in an atmosphere of mostly incense smoke.

I wanted to say thank Buddha we have Indian restaurants in Taiwan. Otherwise I fear I may die from malnutrition eating McDonald’s and/or convenience store food all week.

In fairness, Sukiya also appears to be open, so I suppose I could diversify my diet by dining there too.

Happy new year to all!

2 days of the same food for every meal.. I’m done lol. My stomach doesn’t agree with it at all.

Nothing wrong with the taste, just the aforementioned sitting around all day problem.

I gotta say you cant beat cold turkey sandwiches made with Christmas leftovers.

Good looking food! What restaurant is this? (We had also the same pork, which we ate over two days, and rice dumpling a local one.)

On a bright Saturday in Taipei, I had the pleasure of meeting aggressive drivers, drivers honking their horns like a-holes, drivers running red lights. Police or any form of traffic enforcement? Nowhere to be found.

It seems the holidays are over and we are back to normal in Taipei!

Up here on the north coast it’s pretty much the same thing so we are staying up on the mountain away from the craziness.

So I was in Zhonghe this evening to get my dinner on the incomparable Huaxin Street aka Burma Town. Cop are everywhere at the entrance to Huaxin Street. What’s going on? Is Hou You-yi in the hood campaigning or something?

Apparently, as I heard from the laoban of my preferred biryani shop, the cops are there to keep order as so many people are heading up to and down from the famed MONEY GOD temple further up in the hills.

If any forumosans have not yet visited this temple (I did, once) it must be seen to be believed.

Do you happen to have the Chinese for that “money god temple”?

And what is your preferred biryani shop? I have never gone down there to eat, though I have been meaning to.

It’s this guy:

I like many places in Burma Town, but for biryani in Zhonghe this is my go-to shop:

Living life the way it was meant to be!

EDIT: You’re no fun for removing those great photos. That food looked delicious.

That was meant to be a private message. It’s twice I’ve done that in the past week.

Didn’t take pictures, but went to wife’s parents’ place before Johannine New Years eve. Was tasked to make a traditional steamed grouper dish for the new year eve feast. Then a few days later was tasked to make pasta for the family. Used left over tiger prawn heads to make bisque sauce pasta. Fresh tomatoes and carrots picked directly from the garden by my daughter. Had to replace celery with cilantro, and white wine with grape juice ( the kind that comes in a wine bottle). Turned out pretty ok, but the family commented that the pasta is not cooked all the way through. I guess al dente is an aquired texture.

Paella also gets the same comments. Luckily I don’t have a paella big enough for more than 3 people, so I can refuse to make it. My menu was lentejas con chorizo, croquetas and tortilla de patatas. I also made arroz con leche but since I didn’t have lemons to use the peel I tried with lemon juice. I thought a little bit would not “cut the milk” (don’t know the English for that). I thought wrong, so I had to throw it away. At least my daughter enjoyed trying curd with honey for the first time.
