Based on that excerpt, Kristof now sounds like Thomas Friedman who would not shut up about Taiwan in terms like that.

There’s nothing new or particularly interesting in that article. We’ve been aware of all this for years. So yes, the Thomas Friedman comparison is apt. How some of these talking heads get paid to crank out banalities opining on the obvious is a bit of a mystery.
Having now read the full article—it does not seem to be paywalled—I suppose the difference is that Kristof expresses his astonishment at how things have changed in parts of Asia including in Taiwan.
The stats he provides about funding for education in Taiwan versus funding for public education in the United States are—while not surprising—mind blowing.
