Night life in Tainan for recently arrived expat

I am an expat that has only begun living and working in Taiwan for a little over one month now and would like some direction on night life and pubs in the Tainan area.
Thanks.

bump

As far as I know, there are alot of expats still going to the Armory which is on GongRuenNan Rd. <SP?>

There are a few nice new nightclubs in Tainan now as well… one being the Fusion Groove Lounge.

and I’ll have to get back to you on the others…

Cheers,

J.

In all the time i’ve been living here, i’ve only been to Tainan one time. Just so happens the best bar i’ve ever been to is down there.l Place is called Dirty Roger and the guy has hundreds and hundreds of Vinyl lining the wall. He’ll play anything you like. Might even let you DJ his own stuff. Really cool guy. Foosball tables upstairs. Anyway, I have no idea how to get there, just ask some people and they should know.
cheers

Try Willy’s Second Base. Owner is an American guy called Steve… played professional baseball back in the US and here in Taiwan. Good food, nice vibe… give it a try.

Sorry, don’t have the address.

Correction:

Steve Wilson is Canadian. The bar is on Jiankang, just east of Junghua W. Road…

Willy’s 2nd base is at 321, Jiankang Rd, Sec 2.
Could also try the Hangout at 128-32 Gung Yuan Rd. Situated next to the Pinnier Hotel. Run by a cool couple Jed and Bonnie.
The Armoury is also nearby.

The Armory is great. It has a nice mix of foreigners and Taiwanese and is located near the park on Gong Yuan Nan Road. Just ask a taxi driver to take you to Ping Kong Tsa (may pinyin may be incorrect) in Gong Yuan Nan Loo and they should know. Nice if you want to relax, meet some cool people and drink a few beers. Staff are friendly and the food is good and affordable.

The Hangout’s not too bad (address above) but I’ve heard Non-Americans say they don’t like the atmosphere. Probably depends who you go with though.

Near the Hangout is Cosby’s I. It’s also a nice sit down and chill bar with cool folks and good food.

Cosby’s II is located in Shi Men Road sort of opposite the Tayih Landis Hotel (which is next to the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi shopping centre). It’s quieter than Cosby’s I. Depends what sort of Atmoshpere you’re looking for.

Will’y Second Base (address above) is also a cool place to hang out at and eat good food (lot’s of Mexican cuisine). Mostly foreigners, and lots of engineers. Which is also largely true of Cosby’s I and II.

Dance clubs include AD next to the Warner Village Cinema complex. Not sure of the road, but Warner Village is in Minzu road. Just go around the corner to find AD. Small but nice vibe from around midnight. Fusion is a new club (address and website provided above) and seems nice although I’ve only been there once. You be the judge. Also you can try Rolling Stones (up the road from the Armory - they have a big sign with the Rolling Stones mouth and tongue logo outside), although they are usually relatively quiet. Some folks also like to go to LA Sight in Jian Kang road although it’s mostly Taiwanese. Once again, depends what you’re looking for.

I’m not big on dancing so I like to go to either Armory or Willy’s to relax, watch sport and eat. Try them all once and decide which ones you like. You should look out for South Magazine (available free at most of these venues) and check out the listings at the back. It also has a handy map.

Happy clubbing and socialising.

The South Magazine was mentioned above. Does anyone know if Rickshaw (another expatriate activities and entertainment magazine) is still in print? I have not seen a new one for a while.

You can still find Rickshaw. I saw one a few weeks ago but they are hard to come by. It’s easier to find South Magazine, or Compass.

This page has some information on Tainan:
